Overall rating 5/5The BMW 435 takes the 4 Series recipe and turns the dial up. Available as a coupe, convertible or Gran Coupe, it ran in the UK from 2013 to 2020 before handing the baton to the 440i. Sitting just below the fire-breathing M4, the 435 has enough punch to thrill without sacrificing comfort. Rivals like the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe might look the part, but the BMW's balance of sharp handling and high-quality finish keeps it at the top of many shopping lists. Under the bonnet, you'll find smooth six-cylinder engines that make motorway miles fly by. Later cars added Apple CarPlay and digital dials, and most come with leather, climate control and BMW's iDrive system as standard. Running costs are steeper than the four-cylinder 4 Series, but in return you get a confident, capable all-rounder that feels special every time you drive it.
Every 435 comes with multiple airbags, stability control and strong crash protection. Parking sensors and emergency braking are common, while higher trims add useful extras like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise.
You'll find two main choices. First is the 435i petrol with a 3.0-litre turbo six, producing about 306 bhp. Then there's the 435d diesel with roughly 313 bhp and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. Both are quick, smooth and well-suited to long drives.
Expect BMW's iDrive infotainment system with sat nav, Bluetooth, DAB radio and a sharp display on every model. Later cars often add Apple CarPlay and digital dials. Leather seats, dual-zone climate and parking sensors are also widely fitted.
The petrol 435i averages around 37mpg, while the diesel 435d can stretch closer to 50mpg. Real-world figures vary, so town drivers should expect a little less, especially if they lean on the car's performance.
Look for a full service history with regular oil changes and recall work. Check suspension for knocks, test all electrics and make sure the iDrive runs smoothly. The AA Vehicle Inspection will help highlight any hidden issues and give you peace of mind.
Engines and mechanicals are hard-working as long as they're serviced on time. A handful of owners mention the odd electrical hiccup, such as sensor faults or infotainment glitches, but BMW dealerships typically take care of these. The bottom line? Look after it properly and the 435 will happily return the favour.
