The BMW X3 is a mid-sized SUV designed to handle daily duties with poise, from school runs and motorway miles to winding down country roads. Drivers value the X3 for its excellent balance between athletic handling and comfort on long-distance journeys. Inside, you’ll find a well-built cabin, a raised driving position and plenty of room for passengers and luggage.
The X3 was first launched in 2003, but it’s the second generation (2010-2018) and third generation (2018-2024) that really impressed UK drivers, thanks to better comfort, updated tech and a premium feel throughout. The latest, fourth generation (from late 2024) brings even bolder design and more advanced hybrid technology, but the bulk of the used market consists of second and third generation models. Compared with rivals like the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Mercedes GLC, the X3 usually feels that bit more rewarding to drive, while still being just as practical.
Key features include a choice of strong diesel, petrol or hybrid engines, BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment, three-zone climate control and a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating (for most generations). Adaptive cruise control, reversing cameras and advanced safety aids are also widely available on newer models.
The BMW X3 comes with six airbags, Isofix child seat mounts and electronic stability control. Most versions also feature lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and reversing cameras. Euro NCAP awarded the X3 a five-star safety rating in 2017, scoring well for both adult and child occupants. Top trims and newer models include even more advanced driver assistance systems.
Used X3s span several engines. Most of the 2010–2018 models are 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre diesels (18d, 20d, 30d, and 35d), with power from 141bhp to 309bhp. You'll also find 2.0-litre petrol options and, from 2018, plug-in hybrids and mild-hybrid engines – balancing performance with lower emissions. Six-cylinder engines offer smooth power but cost more to run, while the 20d diesel hits a sweet spot for most owners.
BMW’s intuitive iDrive infotainment system is standard, along with sat-nav, Bluetooth, DAB radio and smartphone integration on newer models. Earlier generations feature smaller screens and more basic controls, as well as fewer features. But from 2014, most models have a larger display and updated sat-nav. Recent models get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and full digital dashboards, plus features like wireless phone charging and voice control.
The rear-wheel-drive 18d diesel returns up to 55mpg, while the common 20d diesel achieves about 47–52mpg combined, according to official figures. The petrol engines average in the mid-30s for mpg, but recent plug-in hybrid models offer electric-only range for short trips and low overall fuel consumption if charged regularly. Keep in mind that real-world figures can often be lower than official test figures.
Look out for a full service history, as regular maintenance is key. Pay close attention to evidence of recalls being completed for issues like timing chain wear (on older diesels), EGR cooler leaks and Isofix anchorage fixes. Ensure the infotainment system, electrics and parking sensors work as intended, and make sure any issues with the power steering have been addressed. You can also consider The AA Vehicle Inspection for reassurance that the car you're looking at is in good order.
Reliability is reasonable for most X3s, but owner feedback is a bit mixed. Some drivers note issues with electrics, the infotainment system and occasional engine troubles, especially on early diesel models. The 18d/20d diesels after the 2014 facelift have a better reputation than earlier versions. BMW’s dealer network is well rated for aftercare and warranty work, which offers some peace of mind if any issues do arise.
Engine sizes vary by generation. Second-generation (2010–2018) X3s mostly use 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder units. Third-generation and fourth-generation models (2018 onwards) come with a wider range of engines, from efficient 2.0-litre petrols and diesels to 3.0-litre performance models and plug-in hybrids. It's always worth checking the specific model for its engine size and type before buying.
