Petrol vans aren’t as common as diesel in the UK, but they can be a really sensible choice in the right job. They tend to suit lower annual mileage, short, stop-start trips and lighter-duty loads, especially if most of your driving is around town. Petrol engines usually warm up quicker than diesel, and they avoid some of the diesel-specific issues you can get with lots of short journeys (such as emissions system problems when a diesel can’t regularly get up to temperature).
They can also make life simpler if you drive into low-emission zones. In London’s ULEZ, petrol cars and light vans need to meet Euro 4 emissions standards to avoid the daily charge, while diesels need Euro 6. That said, it’s not based on age alone, so it’s always worth checking the specific van you’re looking at.
Before you buy, focus on the basics that matter on any used work van: a clear service record, an MOT history that doesn’t show repeated advisories, and a test drive that confirms it pulls cleanly with no warning lights.
