Let’s say you do a lot of long-distance motorway commuting or driving, with occasional European road trips, plus the daily driving duties. Chances are you are better off with a highly fuel-efficient diesel car that also eats up miles effortlessly with its torquey engine. Diesel cars can be less refined and more polluting than petrol cars, but they are still the most frugal option of the two.
The only thing to note while picking a used diesel car is the emission standards. Some older diesel models have higher emissions, newer ones, especially the ones that meet Euro 6 standards, are a better option as they are exempt from low emission zone charges, even ULEZ in London. Depending on the model, diesel cars could also be more expensive to service and maintain. But if it ultimately comes down to outright fuel economy, there’s no better option than a used diesel car!
