Since its launch in 2004, the BMW 1 Series has offered drivers a compact yet dynamic alternative to mainstream hatchbacks. Early generations stood out, thanks to their sporty rear-wheel drive set-up. From 2019 onwards, models moved to a more spacious, front-wheel drive layout with more rear legroom and a larger boot. Overall, a car that's perhaps better suited to the busy needs of family life. Whichever version you choose, the 1 Series is a great all-rounder and clear rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class and Volkswagen Golf, thanks to its upmarket feel and efficient engines. It also impresses with smart tech, strong safety scores and a truly comfortable ride.
When buying a used BMW 1 Series, condition and service history matter most. Listen for timing chain rattle on start-up, especially on older petrol and diesel models, and check for oil or coolant leaks. It’s also worth checking the MOT history, as repeated advisories can show how well the car has been maintained.
