Shopping for a comfortable luxury sedan or estate that can munch motorway miles like a walk in the park but also be frugal on fuel, so it doesn’t burn a huge hole in your wallet? An executive mid-size sedan with a hybrid/diesel/electric powertrain featuring a rich cabin, extensive equipment and competent sound insulation is the best car for the job!
The executive car segment is dominated by European sedans, mostly from German brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. However, there have also been some new players to the space, like the all-electric models from Tesla. They are great long-distance cruisers with a well-appointed cabin, infotainment and other modern features that will make your everyday commute that much easier. Plus, they are perfect as a company car and for corporate/professional use.
Executive cars are typically some of the most technology-laden models on the market, and if you're looking at buying one, the first thing you should check is that everything works as it should. Mainly, all the tech features, like the main touchscreen system, digital displays, audio system, driver aids, air suspension, electric and heated seats, etc.
With executive cars being made from more expensive parts, it's worth factoring in the higher running costs that come with these when budgeting. Since executive cars also spend a lot of time on motorways, expect higher than average miles on used cars, but these miles should be documented well with a full-service history from a dealer or an independent garage. If you are looking for diesel executive cars, make sure you require a ULEZ-compliant Euro 6 diesel for your commute or use. These cars are built to do a lot of miles, but depending upon the model, there might be specific areas to check, such as timing chains/belts, cooling system, subframe corrosion, EGR issues, etc.
If you're a little bit fed up with your mainstream brands and fancy something a little bit more special and upmarket, then an executive car is a fantastic choice. Typically premium saloons, executive models offer a certain level of prestige that run-of-the-mill options just can't offer and benefit from more powerful engines and generally plusher and better-equipped interiors. Though they do incur more expensive price tags, they often hold their value quite well in the long run.
The executive car class is absolutely dominated by German brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes which take up a large percentage of sales. However, there are plenty of more left-field firms to consider as well, with Volvo, Lexus and Jaguar all proving appealing options.
There is also an increasing number of hybrid and electric choices on offer in this class, with BMW's 330e plug-in hybrid proving very popular. While if you fancy an electric executive car, the Tesla Model 3 is the key leader here.
Luxury cars are larger cars with more priority on luxury, while executive cars are mid-to-large-sized luxury cars that are also much more affordable to buy and run. There's quite a lot of overlap and blurred lines when it comes to classing a car as 'executive' or 'luxury'. Typically, however, executive cars are smaller. If we take a look at Mercedes, its C- and E-Class models are classed as 'executive', while its flagship S-Class is placed into the 'luxury' segment. In essence, executive cars perfectly bridge the gap between mainstream cars and luxury models.
Generally, when an 'executive car' is mentioned, it's related to what's called an E-segment saloon – including the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class – which are different to SUVs.However, many executive saloons share things in common with premium SUVs – the latest Mercedes GLC, for example, is based on the same underpinnings as the brand's C-Class.
Executive cars are a popular choice for manufacturers to make sportier versions of, particularly when we take a look at the German brands.BMW's 3 Series transforms into the M3 when it gets the racier treatment, and likewise, the Mercedes E-Class becomes the Mercedes-AMG E63. These models are unsurprisingly much more expensive to buy, but still get that high-quality cabin, just with plenty more performance and driving thrills to boot.
An executive car is a type of mid-size or large luxury sedan/estate that is more affordable than a high-end luxury car. They are designed to be affordable, especially when it comes to fuel economy, as they are mostly intended for business use.
Insurance for an executive car can cost anywhere from around £1,000 to over £10,000 annually. This depends on various factors such as the price of the executive car, driver’s address, annual mileage, age (used car), driver’s age and experience, etc. Generally, it is more expensive to insure an executive car as they belong to a higher insurance band group.
The difference between a car and an executive car is that it is a mid-size or large luxury model that offers everything you get in a high-end luxury car, mostly with a fuel-efficient engine option for business or corporate use.
