Like its siblings the A3 and A4 - of which it is essentially an upgraded model - the A5 ticks all the boxes of stereotypical German design: handsome, powerful and refined. Naturally sportier than the A4, the 7.8 seconds it takes the entry-level 1.8 turbocharged petrol to hit 62mph shows it to be no slouch, while the characteristic Audi style gives both inside and out a desirability that makes it as enjoyable to drive as it is to be seen driving. A big boot means it is practical too, but with limited rear passenger space it's a car primarily designed for those in the driving seat.
