It packs big-car comfort, top-class tech and a practical liftback boot into a distinctive package designed to turn heads. While the Audi A7 stands out for its spacious interior and streamlined coupe-style looks, it also offers impressive everyday usability. Owners love its top-spec interior, digital dashboard and host of safety features – making it a serious contender if you’re after luxury without shouting about it. The first A7 arrived in 2010, with a comprehensive update in 2018 adding even more advanced technology, a sleeker profile and greater efficiency. Compared to the Mercedes CLS, BMW 6 Series GT or even a classic A6, the A7’s edge comes from its blend of performance, functionality and design. Later-generation A7s feature mild-hybrid engines, clever driver assists and smooth handling.
The latest Audi A7 models come well-equipped for safety. Expect autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning and automatic skid control. Extras like blind-spot monitoring and night vision are also available. Overall, the A7 shares many advanced systems with the flagship A8, making safety a real strength.
Engine availability varies by generation. First-gen A7s (2010–2017) came with petrol and diesel, including potent V6s. The second generation (from 2018) introduced refined 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid. On full charge, this offers between 25 and 41 miles of EV driving for short runs and is backed up by a TFSI petrol engine for longer trips.
Most Audi A7s are fitted with a digital Virtual Cockpit, dual touchscreen displays, sat nav and DAB radio. Many later models come with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which you can also have retrofitted. Higher specs add premium sound systems, wireless charging or advanced navigation. The infotainment setup is clear, sharp and customisable – although the touchscreens can take some getting used to on the move.
Official mpg varies by engine: diesels can return around 50mpg on a gentle run, while the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid petrols are economical for their power. Real-world figures depend on your driving style, but most A7s will be more frugal than their size and performance might suggest – something to keep in mind if you're a regular on the motorway.
A7s are built for long distances, so check for worn suspension and chips on the front. Alloy-wheel damage from on-street parking can also be an issue. Some owners report electrical niggles and firm-riding suspension on S line versions. A full-service history is a must. For reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
Surveys show the A7’s reliability is better than many rivals, especially for the years 2010–2017. More recent models also perform well, though some electrical faults have been reported. The A7 was awarded a strong reliability score in owner surveys – ranking above Audi’s brand average.
