When introduced in 2019, the Audi e-tron helped usher electric power into the premium SUV segment. This first model was sold through 2022 and then evolved into the Audi Q8 e-tron. It slots between the Audi Q5 and Q7 in size, offering five spacious seats and a generous boot – ideal for school runs, weekend escapes and road trips. Compared to rivals like the Jaguar I-Pace, BMW iX3 and Mercedes EQC, the e-tron shines with plush comfort, impressive quietness and top-notch cabin quality. Early e-trons come well-equipped, with technology and safety features like heated seats and adaptive cruise control as standard. Later models build on these with even more driver aids and comforts. While real-world range and efficiency may fall short of newer EVs, the e-tron remains a solid choice for those prioritising refinement and space.
The Audi e-tron boasts a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, supported by a full suite of airbags, Isofix mounts on all outer seats and strong crash protection. Standard safety tech includes automatic emergency braking (Audi Pre-sense), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and – on higher trims – a 360-degree parking camera.
All Audi e-trons are all-electric with quattro all-wheel drive. Models from 2019 to 2022 come in three versions: 50 quattro (313bhp, 71 kWh battery), 55 quattro (408bhp, 95 kWh), and S (503bhp, 95 kWh, tri-motor). Depending on the version and driving style, you can expect a real-world range of 150–200 miles.
Every e-tron packs plenty of tech: a sharp digital driver display, at least one central touchscreen and built-in navigation with real-time traffic. Expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and heated seats. Top trims add head-up displays, Bang & Olufsen speakers and virtual door mirrors.
Most e-trons return between 2.2 and 2.7 miles/kWh, translating to around 150 to 200 miles on a full charge. Official figures may list up to 254 miles, but real-world results are typically lower – worth noting if range is a priority.
Inspect the battery's condition and ask for proof of software updates. Confirm that both charging cables are included and thoroughly test all screens and electronic systems. Some owners have reported issues with infotainment or charging. Consider The AA Vehicle Inspection for extra reassurance – especially for earlier models or high-mileage cars.
The e-tron feels solid and well-built, though reliability has been mixed. Common issues include infotainment bugs and charging glitches, which occasionally trigger warning lights or require dealer attention. Audi backs the battery with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty. Be sure to review service records for recurring electrical faults.
