Overall rating 4/5The Audi RS4 is a performance-focused estate based on the same platform as the A4 Avant. It offers remarkable pace without skimping on space or comfort. Many drivers love its blend of strong acceleration, advanced technology and classic Audi solidity. Competing with fast estates like the Mercedes-AMG C63 and BMW M3 Touring, the RS4 is praised for all-season grip and a well-built cabin. Key features on modern RS4s include Audi's Virtual Cockpit, adaptive suspension, and slick automatic or manual gearboxes.
The Audi RS4 is based on the A4, which scored five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing. Modern RS4s come with emergency braking assist, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and several airbags. You'll find ISOFIX mounting points for child seats in the rear and front passenger side, which is something for family drivers to note.
Earlier RS4 models, from the mid-2000s, used a high-revving 4.2-litre V8. The latest generation, from 2017 onwards, is fitted with a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, producing around 450 bhp. There's no diesel option. All RS4s are paired with quattro all-wheel drive and there's a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox.
Most used Audi RS4s feature Audi's Virtual Cockpit – a digital driver’s display – plus sat-nav, Bluetooth and DAB radio. You get either an 8.3-inch or 10.1-inch infotainment display, depending on generation and trim level. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are often included in newer models. Heated sports seats, dual-zone climate control and excellent build quality are the norm.
Recent Audi RS4 models (2.9 TFSI V6) average between 30-33mpg on official tests, though real-world driving often sees lower numbers, especially with spirited use. Older V8 models tend to be thirstier, often managing mpgs in the low-to-mid 20s.
Look for a full Audi or specialist service history – this is especially important for older V8s. Check for signs of oil leaks and listen for unusual engine noises. Ensure tyres and brakes are up to the RS4's power. Consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection for peace of mind before you buy.
Reliability is average for the class. Audi interiors wear well and serious mechanical issues are rare if the car has been serviced correctly. Some drivers report issues such as diverter-valve failure and overheating. The RS4’s advanced tech and powerful engine mean regular checks are wise, especially with older cars.
