The Audi A8 is built for those who value comfort, space and confident road presence. As Audi’s flagship saloon since 1994, the A8 stands out for its refined drive and roomy luxury, as well as impressive in-car technology. The latest generation, launched in 2017 and refreshed in 2021, keeps pace with fierce rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. Expect a choice of powerful and efficient engines, including a practical plug-in hybrid. Inside the A8, you’ll find first-class seating, plenty of cabin space (even more in the long-wheelbase ‘L’ models) and a suite of clever gadgets. Its standard features outshine many alternatives, making it a trustworthy companion for long journeys and city drives. The A8 is famed for its cushioning air suspension, quietness and user-focused design, which combine to set a new standard for comfort.
All A8 models come fitted with advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Lane-keep assistance is offered via an optional pack, while top-end versions add matrix LED headlights for improved night driving.
The current A8 (2017–present) offers a 3.0-litre V6 diesel (50 TDI), a 3.0-litre V6 petrol (55 TFSI) and a plug-in hybrid (60 TFSI e). The A8's high-performance version, the S8, comes with a 4.0-litre V8 petrol. All come with eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive to handle traction and stability.
You get a digital instrument cluster, known as a Virtual Cockpit, along with two high-definition touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a premium sound system as standard. Higher trims add head-up display (which projects key info onto the windscreen), rear entertainment screens and Bang & Olufsen audio for extra luxury.
Diesel models are nudging 40–50mpg on the combined cycle, while petrol versions are in the lower range. The plug-in hybrid can do up to 38 miles on electric power alone and achieves lower official fuel consumption figures in town.
Check that all infotainment screens and touch-sensitive controls work, and inspect the air suspension for faults. Ask about any recalls on shock absorbers or seat rails. For peace of mind, a thorough pre-purchase check like The AA Vehicle Inspection service is a smart move.
The A8 has an average reliability record, with most issues linked to electrical systems or air suspension. It’s not a class leader, but many cars are well cared for. Regular servicing and a full history are important with this advanced model.
