Expert Opinion

Although today used almost exclusively as a commercial vehicle, the VW Transporter was first released in 1950 and has a long, eventful and iconic history. In the UK the early models are better known as the VW Camper, and are instantly recognisable with their now iconic design. The more modern vehicles are far from this retro styling however, and are instead functional, practical vans with copious amounts space and powerful, capable engines. Within the range there are models which cater for either passenger or goods transport - such as the Kombi, which has space for up to six people as well as luggage - and those primed for goods transport, such as the panel van, which has a cavernous 9300 litres of space. The most modern models include BlueMotion technology to make them more efficient, but as a large commercial vehicle their strengths are their functionality and practicality as opposed to their affordability.

Icon is an overused work in the automotive world, but it's one worthy of the Volkswagen Transporter. As far back as 1950, this was the coolest way to get you and your family around. It's also been one of the best possible ways to improve your street cred over the years.

Today, the Transporter remains hugely popular, with an extremely loyal VW fanbase that appreciates the Transporter’s vast usability, high-quality interior and strong engines, with a broad range of versions to suit a whole host of budgets and tastes.

Why buy a used Transporter?

The Transporter has plenty going for it, but high up on the reasons to choose it is its image. In the van/shuttle segment, nothing can compete with this VW when it comes to the badge. It's a model that's easily recognisable by most, and there are always plenty of people that will want a Transporter. The key advantage to this is that this is a model with impressive resale values, so while you might spend more on it in the first place, it will hold its value impressively well.

It's among the best vans to drive around, too, with an almost car-like feel from behind the wheel. This is helped by some fantastic 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines under the bonnet. With the Transporter available with up to 201bhp, and when coupled with 4Motion all-wheel-drive, this is a van that can seriously shift if needs be. Despite this, the Transporter’s engines are still efficient, while the overall driving experience is a very refined and comfortable one, at least by van standards.

That car-like feel continues to the Transporter's interior too. All versions are equipped with the latest touchscreen system, which is offered in a size of up to eight inches, while there's a vast range of safety features on offer, in-line with those that you’d expect on Volkswagen's car models. Highlights include park assist and travel assist, with the latter able to control the speed and steering, and this takes some of the stress out of longer trips.

At the same time, the Transporter doesn’t fall short when it comes to practicality and versatility. There are different lengths and roof heights available depending on what you’re using it for, with a maximum interior length of almost three metres on long-wheelbase versions. The maximum payload on offer is 1,217kg too.

Transporter updates

Here's a history of the Volkswagen Transporter, dating back to 1946.

Initially penned straight after WW2, the Transporter T1 began production in 1950, with the split windscreen (known as the splittie) becoming an instant hit, and remains hugely well-loved even today.
It wasn’t until 1967 that the Transporter T2 arrived. Though looking much like its predecessor, it was a significant redevelopment, becoming roomier, quicker and much better to drive.
Representing a complete transformation, the T3 debuted in 1979 and looked noticeably different to its predecessors, with a wider, longer and more spacious design.
Moving forward to more modern Transporters, the T4 launched in 1990 and was the first to use the now-commonplace front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. It was much better to drive and offered more choice than ever.
The T5 Transporter arrived in 2003 and was another big step forward in terms of on-road manners and interior design. This was also the first Transporter available from the factory as a camper van.
The T6 was launched in 2015, and though not much different to look at, it had a thoroughly different interior, greater safety kit and more efficient engines under the bonnet.

Which used Transporter should I buy?

There are three main trim levels offered on the Transporter – Starline, Highline and Sportline. Equipment highlights are as follows.

18-inch Sportline alloy wheels, Nappa leather and Alcantara interior, Eibach lowering springs, rear tailgate spoiler, revised front and rear bumpers, Sportline carpets, larger touchscreen, LED headlights, heated front seats, digital cockpit, reversing camera.

What should I look for when buying a used Transporter?

As with any van, check the sides and bumpers for any damage, particularly on models with painted bumpers, rather than the cheaper-to-fix plastic.
Make sure the seats fold and slide as they should too, and that the doors slide and open as they should.
Vans typically cover lots of miles, where it’s easy to miss out on regular servicing, so make sure vehicles have been properly maintained.
