Petrol cars are the go-to choice for motorists, because they are widely available and offer many advantages over diesel cars. With the inception of turbocharged petrol engines, petrol cars have become much more fuel efficient over the years. Although hybrids and electric cars are increasingly becoming popular, petrol cars are a compelling choice for many new and used car buyers.
When you factor in various parameters such as purchasing cost, running cost, reliability, long-distance ability, used petrol cars often emerge as the most affordable option even today. Although electric cars are cheaper to run, they still command a premium in the used car market compared to an equivalent petrol car.
Petrol cars are considered the better option for normal usage with city driving and shorter distances while diesel cars offer much more fuel economy, making them a better choice for higher annual mileage. But, with increasing emission norms and clean emission zones in various cities, petrol cars are the better option as they are cleaner and greener than diesel cars.
A figure of around 35 mpg (combined) can be considered a good mpg for petrol cars. However, a fuel consumption under 25 mpg could also indicate poor fuel consumption.
A petrol car can last around 10-15 years or close to 200,000 miles if it is regularly maintained. Modern petrol engines are reliable as long as you follow the manufacturer’s service schedule. It also depends on the make and model, as some cars can last a long time and exceed over 300,000 miles.
Generally, it is best to change oil in a petrol car every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. But every car is different, so manufacturer’s service intervals should be strictly followed. If you are unsure about the oil change interval, please check your owner's manual.
