A dropside van is built for easy loading. With an open flatbed and sides that drop down, it suits builders, landscapers and anyone carrying awkward materials that are hard to slide into a panel van. When buying used, start by matching bed size and payload to your work. Dropsides are usually built on a chassis cab, and the body, toolboxes and any ladder rack all reduce payload, so check the plated weights and what the van can legally carry.
Inspect the body closely. The dropsides should latch firmly, hinges should not be cracked or seized, and the headboard should be straight. Look underneath for rust on the bed frame and crossmembers and check the load deck for damage from forklift tines. Tie-down points matter because load security is critical on an open body.
Loading height varies with chassis and conversion. Some manufacturers offer chassis and conversion options designed for a lower load height, so compare specifications if that matters to your work.
Finally, look for signs of hard use such as tired rear springs, uneven tyre wear and hard-worked brakes. An AA inspection can help you avoid expensive surprises.
