Mild hybrid (MHEV)
Mild hybrids typically produce electricity via additional parts such as a small additional battery or an integrated starter-generator. The energy produced is generally short lived.
We have 70 Plug-in Hybrid vans in stock. All vans come with 12 months free breakdown cover (or a discounted upgrade if you're an AA member) and £75 off your next service & MOT.

Mild hybrids typically produce electricity via additional parts such as a small additional battery or an integrated starter-generator. The energy produced is generally short lived.
Self-charging hybrids, as their names suggest, don't need plugging in but can only travel for short bursts with the engine off, predominantly around town.
Plug-in hybrids can typically be charged from empty to full in a few hours, and can then travel far more electric-only miles than other types of hybrids.
Consider a pre-purchase vehicle inspection. An independent AA mechanic will check for any issues, helping you avoid costly surprises.

A PHEV van (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) is designed to give you electric running for shorter trips, with a petrol engine as backup when you need to go further. The key point is that you get the best out of a PHEV when you plug it in regularly. If you don’t charge it, it’ll still work, but you’ll be carrying extra battery weight without seeing the same fuel-saving benefit.
For van buyers, PHEVs can be a good fit if your week is a mix of local jobs and occasional longer runs, or if you want easier city access without committing to a full electric van. Electric-only range varies a lot by model. Some compact PHEV vans now offer around 70+ miles of official WLTP electric range, while larger, heavier PHEV vans typically offer less.
If you drive into London and other clean air zones, don’t assume a PHEV is automatically compliant. ULEZ is based on the vehicle’s declared emissions standard. For vans, TfL lists minimum standards of Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel.
Buying used, focus on service history, the condition of the charging port and cables, and a test drive that confirms it drives smoothly in EV mode and hybrid mode with no warning lights. An AA Vehicle Check or AA inspection can add reassurance before you commit.
