A used tipper van can be a brilliant tool for builders, landscapers and local authorities, but it’s also one of the hardest worked types of light commercial. The first step is to match the tipper to your job. Think about payload, whether you need a single cab or crew cab, and whether you want a standard tipper, dropside tipper or a specialist body. Remember that the weight of the tipper body and any toolboxes eats into payload.
Because many tippers live on sites, check the chassis and underbody carefully. Look for corrosion, cracks, bent crossmembers and signs of overloading. Inspect the rear suspension, tyres and brakes, and don’t ignore poor or uneven tyre wear. The tipping gear needs a close look too. Test the tipper operation, listen for pump noise, check the hydraulic ram for leaks, and make sure the safety props and tailgate latches work as they should.
Paperwork matters. A good service history and a tidy MOT record are important, but also ask who built the body and whether it’s been maintained. An AA inspection can help you avoid buying a van that’s been worked beyond its limits.
