Overall rating 4.5/5The A1 is the smallest Audi in the range, but don’t let its size and positioning mislead you. It is every bit as premium as other Audi models. A perfect city car, the A1 debuted in 2010 as a car for packed cities.
There have been two generations of the Audi A1; both boldly aimed at mid-range practicality rather than exuberant desirability. The interior is well-equipped, if not quite as laden as its bigger siblings, the drive is smooth and refined, and the engines are both powerful and efficient. As a downside, it might come across as a bit pricey, sitting at the top end of its class. But as a used buy, you get a well-built, feature loaded and premium hatchback with one of the best cabins in its segment.
The new second-generation Audi A1 comes with a host of standard safety features. Some highlights include airbags as usual, ABS, traction control, brake assist, hill hold assist, Audi Pre-sense for front, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, parking sensors, rear camera, blind spot monitoring, etc.
The first-generation Audi A1 has been offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engines are the 1.2, 1.4 and the 1.8-litre TFSI engine. Meanwhile, the diesel is Audi’s trusted TDI range – 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI. With the second-generation, Audi only offers the A1 with petrol engines – 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0-litre TFSI.
The Audi A1 is known for being equipped with numerous technology and infotainment features, especially since it is an Audi Some key features include 10-inch digital driver’s display and infotainment system, Sonos sound system, Audi driver assistance technology suite, etc.
The fuel consumption of the Audi A1 depends on the specific engine and drivetrain configuration. The current generation with the 1.5-litre TSI engine can deliver approximately 42 to 48 mpg combined. Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre TFSI engine is rated between 35 and 40 mpg, combined. The smaller 1.0-litre TSI is the most frugal of the lot with fuel economy breaching the 50mpg mark. On another note, the diesel variants from the first-generation A1 are even more fuel efficient with the 1.6 TDI claimed to offer anywhere between 68 and 75 mpg!
