Overall rating 4.5/5Audi has always had a knack for creating fast and very usable performance cars which fly under the radar, and the S3 is a great example of this. With a decent level of power but a healthy dose of practicality, the S3 has become a popular ‘everyday’ performance car and a popular used buy, too.

Overall rating 4.5/5We’re focusing on the third-generation S3 - on-sale between 2013 and 2020 - as it’s the one that you’ll see most frequently on the used market. It was also the age of S3, which cemented this car’s place as a go-to performance car that could still be used on a day-to-day basis. With a high-performance engine, the S3 remains an exciting choice but, as a practical hatchback, saloon or convertible, it’s still got a decent level of space.
Euro NCAP awarded the S3 a five-star rating, with this car’s full complement of airbags helping to contribute towards this. Other safety-focused features include a fatigue detection system which can sound an alert if it notices the driver showing signs of tiredness. The S3 was available with Audi’s pre-safe system as an optional extra, too, which can prepare elements of the car if it detects an incoming impact. It will, for instance, pre-tighten the seatbelts to better hold the occupants in place.
The Audi S3 is available with a single engine option, a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol. It’s available with both a manual and automatic gearbox, while all cars come with Audi’s clever quattro all-wheel-drive system which helps to improve traction, particularly during wet weather.
The Audi S3 is designed to be a performance car, so many of the standard features focus on making this car go more quickly and sound a little louder, which is why sport suspension and a quad exhaust system as highlights in this car’s standard equipment range. However, you also get heated front seats and a compact infotainment screen, as well as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital dials. Look out for Black Edition cars if you want a stealthier appearance, as they get a variety of black-coloured exterior elements which don’t feature on the standard car.
The Audi S3 should be able to return up to 40.9mpg combined, while CO2 figures aren’t too high so overall running costs shouldn’t be too scary.
As a performance car, there’s a good chance that a used example of an S3 might have been driven hard, so look for worn-out brakes, kerbed alloy wheels and tyres with low levels of tread. Double-check that a decent brand of tyre has been fitted, too, as it’ll make all the difference on a car as powerful as the S3. If you’d like a professional to take a look at the car for you, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection as one of our trained engineers will come to see the car in-person and produce a report of their findings.
The S3 is a largely reliable vehicle, with very few major faults being reported by owners. However, it’s still a good idea to look through a car’s service history and make sure that all work has been completed on-time. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection could be worth considering if you need more information.
