Electric vans make the most sense when your work is predictable: regular routes, planned stops, and somewhere reliable to charge, whether that’s at home, at a depot, or at a workplace unit. For local deliveries and urban jobs they can be easier to live with than a diesel, with smooth, quiet driving and strong pull from low speed. They’re also a natural fit if you work in or around clean air zones, because they produce zero tailpipe emissions.
The main thing to plan for is range. Official figures are useful for comparison, but real-world range will change with temperature, speed, payload and driving style, and it can drop on cold days or fast motorway runs. Charging speed also matters just as much as battery size, because an electric van that supports rapid charging can be far easier to keep working day-to-day.
If you’re buying used, focus on service history, how the van has been charged and used, and whether the range works for your typical week rather than your best day. If you want extra confidence before you commit, an AA Vehicle Check or AA inspection can help you verify the van’s background and condition.
