What should I check before buying a used car under £4k?

We’d always advise checking a car’s service history, no matter how much it costs. It’s a good idea to run a background check on a car, too, which can flag if it has previously been written off or if it has any outstanding finance. The government’s MOT checker tool is a great asset, too, as it provides you with a basic level of history about the car’s MOT tests - it’s free, too.
Which used car brands are most reliable under £4,000?

At this price point, cars which are less complex will prove to be the most reliable. Brands such as Toyota and Honda are well-known for their reliability, particularly in cars such as the Civic and Yaris. Cars which cost more when brand-new or those equipped with larger engines will likely prove to be a little more troublesome when it comes to reliability but, when well maintained, these can still be a trustworthy option.
Can I find automatic transmission cars under £4,000?

Yes, it’s still possible to find an automatic car for under £4,000. Thanks to the filter tool on the AA Cars website, you can quickly tailor your search to show only cars costing under £4,000 and those which are equipped with an automatic gearbox.
Is buying petrol or diesel cars better in this price range?

This really comes down to the type of driving that you’re doing. If you’re driving shorter distances or completing more local journeys, then a petrol will be your best bet. Diesel cars offer their best efficiency when travelling at greater speeds for longer periods, so if you’re only doing shorter trips, then these simply won’t work to their best abilities. However, if you’re doing longer journeys, then a diesel could be a really good option and will provide better fuel efficiency than a petrol alternative.
