Overall rating 4.5/5Replacing the Starlet, the Toyota Yaris was an all-new model designed with a global audience in mind. Launched at a time when more people were contemplating downsizing to small cars, the Yaris reached showrooms in 1999 in both three- and five-door body styles. Fuel efficiency, space and affordability were some of its main priorities and these were carried on through the generations.
The second-generation Yaris was launched in 2006 with a range of versatile touches, with Toyota then launching the third generation in 2011 with the option of hybrid technology for the first time. In 2020, a fourth generation debuted with a new design, hybrid-only powertrains and a more upmarket interior to take on growing competition. In short, the Toyota Yaris is a perfect used car if you want the purchasing cost and running cost to be as low as possible.

The new Toyota Yaris comes equipped with several key safety features. The main highlight is the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety technologies that includes Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering assist, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist (RSA). The Yaris also comes with basic safety features such as ABS, ESC, airbags, traction control. Hill start assist, etc.
The Toyota Yaris is available with two engines for the current generation – 1.5-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine. Toyota also offered a wide range of engines for all four generations of the Yaris. Some of these are: 1.0, 1.3-litre petrol, 1.4-litre diesel, 1.8-litre petrol (GRMN) and the cracking 1.6-litre turbo engine in the GR Yaris, but that is a bespoke rally car for the road.
Technology and infotainment features in the Toyota Yaris have varied over the years. The newer models pack better technology features such as Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system, Bluetooth connectivity, digital driver’s display, MyToyota app support, dual-zone climate control, JBL premium sound system, heads-up display, etc.
The fuel consumption of a Toyota Yaris depends mostly on the powertrain options. The latest Toyota Yaris with the 1.5 hybrid engine is claimed to deliver 57.3-70.6 mpg for the 116hp version. Meanwhile, the more powerful 130hp version is also not far off with a claimed fuel economy of 65.4-67.3 mpg. Presently, the Yaris is only available as a hybrid and that explains the high fuel economy.
The Toyota Yaris is an extremely popular model, so our advice is to wait for the right car with a full-service history and a limited warranty for complete peace of mind. If budget permits, it is also a good idea to choose a recent model year with a hybrid engine as they are some of the most fuel-efficient cars you can buy today. The early generations of the Toyota Yaris will be older than 10-15 years and one should thoroughly check for any visible body damage, and test-drive the vehicle to check for any obvious issues, noise/vibrations in powertrain or suspension components. If you prefer an expert’s opinion on your next used car, even a Toyota Yaris, our comprehensive inspection service might just be what you are looking for. All you have to do is sign up and wait for our experts to inspect and test drive the car. Following this, a detailed report will be sent to you as an email within 24 hours so you can make an informed decision. It’s as straightforward as that!
The Toyota Yaris is known for its reliability. It is one of the most reliable cars in its segment. So, we do believe that it is a safe buy. However, a poorly maintained Toyota Yaris will have aged badly with numerous issues. Considering that, it is important to choose a good car with a verified service history. Although the number of owners doesn’t exactly translate to a better car, it is safe to pick a car with less owners as it is easier to trace its history.
The Toyota Yaris is available with a range of petrol/diesel/hybrid engine options over four generations. The latest and current generation is only available with a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine. Meanwhile, previous generations were available with engines starting from 1.0-litre going all the way to 1.5-litre, including a 1.4-litre diesel engine.
