The Toyota C-HR is a compact SUV that feels just right for UK roads. Drivers pick the C-HR for its smooth ride, well-equipped interior and excellent fuel economy – especially with hybrid models. First launched in 2017, the C-HR has seen small but useful updates over the years. Most used C-HRs from 2017–2023 will be hybrid, though early models were also available with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. Later versions bring sharper styling, upgraded infotainment and more kit as standard. The C-HR competes well alongside rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Captur and VW T-Roc, but offers a reliability edge that’s hard to beat. Key features found today include Toyota’s Safety Sense suite – which is perfect for that extra peace of mind when you're on the road – and a choice of responsive hybrid engines.
All Toyota C-HR models come with Toyota Safety Sense as standard. This includes pre-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition. The C-HR scored five stars from Euro NCAP, which is especially reassuring for families and commuters alike.
The original C-HR (2017–2023) offered a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and two hybrid engines: a 1.8-litre (122hp) and, later, a 2.0-litre hybrid (184hp). From 2019 onwards, the turbo petrol was dropped and most models are hybrid-only. Newer models (2024 onwards) continue the hybrid legacy, focusing on even greater efficiency.
Most used Toyota C-HRs come with an 8-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, reversing camera and smartphone connectivity. Higher trims include built-in navigation, premium audio, climate control and more convenience features – especially on post-2019 models.
The C-HR hybrid models are highly efficient, returning between 50–58mpg in official tests (WLTP). The 1.2 petrol averages around 40mpg. Real-world economy often lives up to the claims, making it one of the most cost-effective small SUVs on the road.
Check for a full Toyota service history and look for signs of interior wear, especially on higher mileage cars. Ensure the infotainment system and all electrics work as they should. Hybrid batteries are robust, but it’s wise to inspect charging performance. For extra reassurance, consider arranging a service with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Toyota C-HR is widely regarded as extremely reliable. Reports of major faults are rare, with owners praising long life and low running costs. Hybrid models are especially robust, and Toyota’s dealer network is known for service quality – all factors that make for low-stress ownership.
