Overall rating 4/5Best known for its responsive handling and unmistakable silhouette, it appeals to those who value pure driving enjoyment. The MR2 is Toyota’s accessible sports car thrill, practical enough for everyday journeys while providing a spirited drive. Launched in 1984, it spanned three generations until 2007. The Mk2 (1990–2000) is especially popular in the UK, recognised for its balanced mid-engine layout and classic wedge-shaped design. Light weight, rear-wheel drive, and sharp steering define the MR2 today. Later versions include safety updates like ABS and driver airbags but remain focused on performance over modern luxury. The MR2 has withstood the test of time as a driver's car that still turns heads.
Most MR2s from the 1990s offer sturdy side impact bars, ABS brakes, and a driver’s airbag (added from 1994). Alarms, immobilisers and locking wheel nuts were also introduced on later models. Note that these cars do not come with advanced features like side airbags and stability control.
For the UK, the second-generation MR2 (Mk2, 1990–2000) typically came with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, known for strong performance and smooth revving. Earlier Mk1 cars used a smaller 1.6-litre engine, while the Mk3 (2000–2007) featured a 1.8-litre unit. Turbocharged models are rare here.
The MR2 focuses on the essentials. Most cars feature electric windows, alloy wheels and cloth or leather sports seats. On-board technology is basic – there’s no built-in navigation or modern infotainment, and earlier models may lack features like air conditioning or remote locking.
The 2.0-litre Mk2 MR2 averages around 30–34mpg, depending on driving style and condition. Later models with the 1.8-litre engine can be slightly more efficient, but sports car performance means running costs are higher than most hatchbacks.
Inspect for signs of accident or rust damage, especially on the sills and suspension. Engine noise, gearbox smoothness and roof condition (on T-Bar or Roadster models) are also important. Because the MR2 is a specialist car, consider a service from The AA Vehicle Inspection for peace of mind.
The MR2 has a reputation for reliability, especially with regular servicing and care. Engine and gearbox issues are uncommon, but as with any older sports car, neglect or hard use can cause problems. Toyota’s build quality gives the MR2 an edge over some rivals.
