The Toyota Camry is perfect for drivers who value peace of mind and a gentle, unhurried driving experience. First released in its home country of Japan in the early 1980s, it returned to the UK market in 2019. It comes only as a full hybrid automatic, matching modern efficiency expectations. The Camry builds on its American success with a roomy, solid interior and sensible running costs, making it a thoughtful alternative to European rivals like the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo. Whether shuttling family or cruising down motorways, the Camry’s comfort and space shine through. Having been the number one bestselling car Stateside for many years, it's making a comeback in the UK, with several used examples available.
Every UK Toyota Camry comes well-equipped with safety technology. Expect adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. All models feature several airbags, front/rear parking sensors and emergency steering assist. ISOFIX child seat anchors are offered on the Excel trim.
Keeping things simple, the Camry relaunched with a single engine choice: a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol paired with a self-charging hybrid system and CVT automatic gearbox. This takes the stress out of comparing engines – all models offer smooth, economical hybrid performance, with no diesel or manual options to complicate matters.
Standard kit includes a multimedia touchscreen with satnav, DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and auto lights/wipers are also included. What’s missing is Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone mirroring – something to keep in mind if you rely on these. Higher trim models add a wireless phone charger for on-the-move convenience.
Official combined fuel economy is strong, typically between 50.4 and 53.3mpg depending on trim. In mixed real-world driving, it’s common to see close to 50mpg without effort. The hybrid system is particularly frugal in town, taking advantage of electric-only running. Find one with 17-inch instead of 18-inch wheels and you'll make a gain in efficiency here, too.
Check for scuffs or dents, especially at the rear – visibility isn’t the strongest on a Camry. Review paperwork for signs of previous commercial use, as high-mileage examples are common. Also, confirm any recall work was completed, including for the fuel pump and brake booster pump. For added reassurance, consider a car history and condition report through The AA Vehicle Inspection service.
Toyota’s reputation is strong and generally ranks high among ownership reliability surveys. The Camry’s hybrid system and build quality are both praised for longevity, so maintenance worries are refreshingly rare. Some new models were sold with extended 10-year warranties, so check for any remaining coverage.
