Overall rating 4.5/5The Hyundai i10 is the most compact car in the brand’s line-up and provides an entry point to the entire range. Its small proportions mean that it’s easy to park and live with, so you’ll see many i10 models being used around town and in urban environments.
Second-generation cars - made between 2014 and 2020 - strike the best compromise between cost and equipment and it’s this model that we’ll be focusing on here. Plus, the second-generation i10 is a common sight among the used car classifieds here at AA Cars, so you should be able to find one that meets your budget requirements.
The Hyundai i10 gets many big-car safety features, including a full selection of airbags for both front and rear-seat passengers. ISOFIX points are equipped on the rear seats, too, so fixing child seats in place should be both simple and secure. All versions of the i10 get an electronic stability control system as standard, too, to help the car keep on the straight and narrow even when driving in difficult conditions.
There are two engine choices available with the Hyundai i10 and both are frugal and cheap to run. There’s a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit, followed by a larger and more powerful 1.2-litre four-cylinder. Deciding on which one is best for you depends on the type of driving you’re planning to do. The smaller 1.0-litre is peppy enough for around-town driving, but if you often find yourself on the motorway then the more powerful 1.2-litre version is a better option as it offers a greater level of performance which makes the i10 easier to drive at higher speeds.
Entry-level i10 models get a relatively basic set of features, including steel wheels and electric front windows. However, step up to SE grade and there are more included gadgets, including air conditioning, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity. Look out for Premium SE-grade cars if you want the most features available, with these models benefitting from heated front seats, rear parking sensors and alloy wheels, among other features.
Neither engine option in the i10 range will prove heavy on fuel, with the 1.0-litre version able to return a claimed 60.1mpg under older NEDC tests. The 1.2-litre is still very economical, with 57.6mpg being claimed by Hyundai, again under the older NEDC testing regime. Look out for SE Blue-specification cars as these bring the lowest possible emissions of just 93g/km, making it even cheaper to tax.
As popular first-time driver cars, the i10 can be prone to parking scrapes and grazes, as well as an overly worn-out clutch. For this last issue, make sure that the clutch engages properly and doesn’t ‘slip’ at all when you’re moving off. Ensure that the biting point isn’t too high, too. If you’d like a more in-depth mechanical assessment of any used car you’re looking to buy, then an AA Vehicle Inspection can help to bring added clarity. A trained specialist will conduct a full assessment of the vehicle and highlight any key negatives which may be present.
Hyundai vehicles are known for their reliability and the i10 is no different. Many of our driver’s reviews point towards the i10’s reliability, too, so it’s worth checking one out if you’d like to hear more about the i10’s mechanical assuredness from someone who has owned one. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help even further in this area, as it’ll allow a trained technician to conduct a short test drive of any car you’re considering the purchase of and relay any findings back to you.
The Hyundai i10 is available with either a 1.0- or 1.2-litre petrol engine.
