Overall rating 4.5/5The Hyundai i20 is a small car which focuses heavily on practicality and ease of use. It sits within a popular area of the segment, too, with the likes of the Ford Fiesta providing a valiant opponent, but the i20 does very well in terms of standard equipment and value.

Overall rating 4.5/5The i20 has been a core component of Hyundai’s range of cars for some time now, offering a middle ground between the smaller i10 and the larger i30. This means that for many buyers, the i20 presents the ideal compromise between exterior dimensions and interior space, ensuring that it suits the needs of all types of drivers.
While there have been several generations of i20, the one which is most abundant on the used car market was sold between 2015 and 2020. It’s this series of i20 models that offers the best level of value while still incorporating many of the more modern features that you’d want from your next car.

The i20 gets plenty of safety equipment, with a full suite of airbags ensuring that it protects its occupants should an accident occur. There are ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the two outer rear seats, too, and a seatbelt reminder to ensure that everyone aboard is buckled up safely. All versions of the i20 get an electronic stability control system as standard, too, while certain models benefit from speed assistance and lane keep assistance as well.
The i20 engine range is made up of four petrol and two diesels, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. There’s a 1.2-litre petrol unit available in one of two states of tune, while a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder is also available in two outputs. An earlier 1.4-litre petrol was also available with an automatic gearbox, but this was phased out and replaced by a 1.0-litre alternative. In terms of diesel, things are handled by a 1.1-litre three-cylinder or a more powerful 1.4-litre four-cylinder. These are better options for high-mileage drivers.
Standard ‘S’ specification i20 cars don’t get too many luxuries and are only best for those who really need to keep a car’s cost down. From SE grade and above things are much improved, with air conditioning being added alongside alloy wheels and parking sensors. Look out for either Premium SE or Turbo-grade cars if you want the most features, as these get upgrades such as heated seats, a sunroof and a 7.0-inch infotainment system.
All versions of the i20 should prove inexpensive to run. The diesel-powered models are the most frugal, with the 1.1-litre version able to return a claimed 70.6mpg, though these aren’t as commonplace on the used market. The 1.4-litre version should still return just shy of 69mpg, mind. Those cars with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol can still return over 82mpg combined while the 1.2-litre variant can return over 60.1mpg. If you need the best-possible fuel economy, opt for the lower-powered version of each engine.
As a compact car that suits urban driving well, we’d double-check any used i20 model for exterior scratches and dents that usually come from city and town motoring. Likewise, on cars with alloy wheels, check that these haven’t been damaged during parking. If you need a more in-depth mechanical check of a car that you’re looking to buy, then an AA vehicle inspection could provide the answers. With this service, a trained technician will take a look at the vehicle and provide a detailed report on their findings. There are different levels of service, depending on how much detail you want, too.
Hyundai as a brand has a good reputation for reliability and the i20 is an extension of this. Though we’d always check over key interior areas for scrapes and knocks, the i20’s cabin is known to be hard-wearing. Mechanically, the i20’s simple construction means that there’s less to go wrong than with other cars, too. However, an AA vehicle inspection can bring added peace of mind - even on a car as reliable as the i20. Look through the available options to find one which works for you today.
The i20 is available with a range of engine sizes, spanning from 1.0-litre petrol through to a 1.4-litre diesel.
