A practical hatchback and stylish coupe, this car strives to give both without compromise. The Hyundai Veloster came to the UK in 2012 and ran until 2014. It’s best known for its innovative layout and eye-catching looks, offering something different in a space crowded with more conventional hot hatches and coupes. The extra rear door on the passenger side makes access easier while maintaining a sleek look. Most Velosters come with a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine and a solid list of standard equipment. Compared to rivals like the VW Scirocco or Vauxhall Astra GTC, the Veloster trades driving excitement for day-to-day practicality and value. Today, the model still stands as a left-field choice with good kit and a reliable build.
The Veloster has a top five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP. It offers safety features typical for cars of its era, including electronic stability control, six airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts. But there are some more modern features including parking sensors.
Velosters come with a 1.6-litre petrol engine – either naturally aspirated (around 140bhp) or turbocharged (up to 184bhp). The turbo model brings much livelier performance and can go from zero to 62mph in just over eight seconds.
Even standard models include a touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth and climate control, making them pretty well-equipped. Higher specs upgrade the car with the likes of heated front seats and cruise control.
Expect between 40 and 47mpg, though these may be less when it comes to real-life driving, especially if you have a heavier right foot. To further reduce fuel consumption, keep an eye out for the gear shift indicator which lets you know exactly when to change gear.
Focus on service history. Regular oil changes are key, especially for the turbo engine. It's also a good idea to look for electrical issues, signs of worn interior trims and clutch and gearbox conditions – especially if your chosen used car has been driven enthusiastically. For an expert opinion, book The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Veloster’s reliability can be variable. Mechanically, the engines tend to run well with regular servicing. But neglect or hard use can lead to issues so keep that in mind if you're looking for low-stress ownership.
