Overall rating 4.5/5The iX35 was the car used by Hyundai to reinvent its family SUVs. It came with a rounded and friendly exterior design while its cabin came equipped with lots of equipment as standard to help make it an even stronger proposition value-wise.
Plenty of boot space and a great track record for reliability help to boost the ix35’s profile further and, when coupled with some fuel-efficient engines, make this car a very sensible used buy. Its popularity means that you shouldn’t have too much difficulty in finding a used example to meet your budget, too,
When tested in 2010, the Hyundai ix35 was awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP. it scored particularly well for adult occupant protection, too, returning a rating of 90 per cent. It’s equipped with a good number of airbags in all key areas and there are ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats as well. The Hyundai ix35 also has a full electronic stability control system equipped as standard.
The ix35 can be equipped with a 1.6-litre petrol engine while an earlier 2.0-litre diesel is also available and equipped with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive or a six-speed manual gearbox alternative. Later versions of the ix35 came with a more efficient 1.7-litre diesel engine. Look out for models badged as ‘Bluedrive’ if you’re after the best possible efficiency.
The ix35 gets plenty of standard equipment across all models, including electrically assisted wing mirrors, air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity which allows you to take calls or stream music via the car’s audio system. Consider ‘Premium’ specification cars if you’re after more equipment as these models get features such as a panoramic sunroof and automatic lights and wipers.
The best possible fuel efficiency comes from the 1.7-litre turbocharged diesel models, which can return up to 50.4mpg if you opt for clean-running Bluedrive models. Opt for the 2.0-litre diesel model and this falls back to 47.9mpg. Petrol-powered ix35 cars bring a combined fuel consumption figure of 41.5mpg.
As a popular family car, the ix35 may have had a tough life, so on any used example we’d recommend looking out for interior damage and scrapes, as well as marks or dents on the outside from car park dings. When it comes to the more mechanical side of things, an AA vehicle inspection could really help. With it, a trained engineer will look over any car you’re considering the purchase of and produce a report with key findings.
The Hyundai ix35 fares very well in terms of reliability, much the same as many of the brand’s other models. Some issues regarding fuel leaks have been reported, so make sure that you look underneath any car you’re checking out to ensure that no fuel is being dropped. Again, an AA vehicle inspection can help to take away many unknowns and a trained technician will even take the vehicle on a short test to run to ensure everything feels as it should from behind the wheel.
The Hyundai ix35 is offered with a range of engines, spanning from a 1.6-litre petrol through to a 2.0-litre diesel.
