The Hyundai Santa Fe is designed for everyday ease – it’s a large SUV with true seven-seat space, making it a go-to for growing families or anyone who values flexibility. Introduced in 2001, each generation has managed to sharpen not only style, but comfort and efficiency. Plus, the latest models come with generous equipment and reliable diesel or hybrid power on top. Compared to similar SUVs like the Kia Sorento or Skoda Kodiaq, the Santa Fe makes its mark with excellent value and interior capacity. Its 2021 facelift even pushed it into the realm of rivalling the Land Rover Discovery Sport, but with a more appealing lower price tag.
The Hyundai Santa Fe is packed with safety kit. Recent models come with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and a blind spot detection system that can use the brakes to help prevent an accident. In Euro NCAP's latest crash testing, the car scored a reasonable four out of five stars.
Most used Santa Fes from 2013 to 2020 use a strong 2.2-litre diesel engine, found with either manual or automatic gearboxes and optional four-wheel drive. From 2021, you’ll find hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models using a 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with electric motors for lower running costs.
Spec depends on the year, but expect an intuitive touchscreen system, climate control and cruise control. Higher trims add in features like sat nav, heated seats and a panoramic roof.
Official figures for the 2.2-litre diesel models range from around 39 to 42mpg, depending on age, gearbox and wheel size. Hybrids can average 44mpg in real-world use, while plug-in hybrids theoretically offer over 170mpg – though that's less likely to be seen in real life. When it comes to charging capacity, the PHEV gives a range of up to 36 miles.
Check for a full service history and proper functioning of the infotainment and electronic safety systems. For diesels, ensure the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is working well and look for excessive wear in the interior. Generally, the Santa Fe scores above average for reliability. Newer hybrids and plug-in models earn positive feedback and many owners report minimal issues, thanks to Hyundai’s robust engineering. Some older diesels can have DPF or electrical niggles so keep that in mind.
