Overall rating 4/5The Hyundai Amica is a compact city car loved for its low running costs, easy parking, and decent equipment list. It offers generous headroom and space for four adults, with features like power steering and air conditioning available on higher specs. Sold in the UK from 2000 to 2009, it came with 1.0-litre and later 1.1-litre petrol engines, making it reliable and practical for urban driving.
Safety equipment is average. Hyundai Amicas only come with a driver’s airbag, with ABS brakes being standard on later models. ISOFIX child seat mounts tend not to be fitted and side airbags are rare, so bear this in mind if you want more up-to-date safety tech.
From 2000 to 2003, the Amica came with a 1.0-litre petrol engine producing up to 55bhp. A 1.1-litre petrol engine then became standard, bringing power up to 62bhp. This upgrade brought better everyday performance, but all engines favour reliability over speed.
The Amica’s technology is intentionally simple – there’s no in-built infotainment or modern touchscreen tech here. Basic models include electric front windows with the upgraded trim, including air conditioning and central locking.
Fuel economy is one reason people like the Amica. You can expect between 41 and 44mpg from the 1.0-litre engine. The 1.1-litre unit is similarly frugal but can achieve up to 50mpg.
Look out for signs of rust around the wheel arches and sills, as well as noisy suspension or worn interior plastics. Electrical faults are rare, but always check all windows and locks are working. To feel more confident in your chosen used car, consider a full inspection with The AA Vehicle Inspection service before you buy.
Reliability is a real strength for the Amica – it's built for everyday life rather than the garage. The engines are simple and tough, and parts are generally cheap and widely available.
