With its tidy size and solid Swedish design, the Volvo XC40 is a strong contender in the family SUV segment. Owners appreciate its safety kit, comfort and high-quality interior. Launched in 2017, the XC40 set a new standard for small premium SUVs and quickly won many accolades. Several updates have kept it fresh, and both petrol and electric versions are now available, meaning it now also caters to more eco-minded drivers. Compared to the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X1, and Volkswagen Tiguan, the XC40 stands out for its safety-first approach and thoughtful details, like clever storage and roomy rear seats. Today’s XC40 impresses with mild-hybrid engines, digital dash and smart tech, all wrapped up in a practical package.
The Volvo XC40 comes packed with safety tech as standard. It has automatic emergency braking (detecting vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians), traffic sign recognition and Oncoming Lane Mitigation. Mid and top trims add blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert. The XC40 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating and scores highly for family protection.
Earlier XC40s were offered with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines, though recent versions focus on 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol units (B3 and B4). The electric model has been rebranded as the Volvo EX40. Used diesels are available from the early years, while plug-in hybrids were offered up to 2023.
All XC40s get a 9-inch central touchscreen with sat nav (powered by Google Maps), digital instruments, rear camera, parking sensors and wireless phone charging. Apple CarPlay is always included, but Android Auto may not be. Higher trims add a 360-degree camera, Harman Kardon audio and heated seats.
Mild-hybrid petrol versions offer around 35mpg in real-world UK driving. Early diesels can return 40-50mpg, while plug-in hybrids manage over 100mpg on short trips with regular charging. Full electric models (now EX40) don’t use fuel at all, but have a quoted range of roughly 260 miles on a full charge.
Look for a full main dealer service history, especially for early diesels and plug-in hybrids which can be more expensive to maintain. Check the infotainment system works as it should, as well as all screens and safety aids. For total peace of mind, book a comprehensive check with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
According to recent owner surveys, the Volvo XC40 performs fairly well for reliability, sitting above some rivals like the Evoque. Volvo as a brand ranks mid-table among premium makers. Most XC40s come with at least a three-year warranty and strong roadside cover, though servicing costs can be higher than mainstream alternatives.
