Overall rating 4/5With its clever folding metal roof and four-seat layout, it’s ideal for open-top cruising – without giving up on practicality or year-round usability. The Volvo C70 blends the freedom of a convertible with Volvo’s trusted safety and everyday comfort. Unlike many two-seaters, it offers space for four adults, making it a more versatile choice for daily use or relaxed weekend drives. The second generation (2006–2013) features a folding metal hardtop that transforms from coupe to convertible in around 30 seconds – offering added insulation and security over fabric-roofed rivals. Earlier models (1997–2005) came as either a soft-top or fixed-roof coupe. Although not the sportiest in its class, the Volvo C70 is known for its composed drive and strong build quality. Inside, you’ll find a well-finished, understated cabin with dual-zone climate control, cruise control and, on post-2012 models, a more modern infotainment screen with Bluetooth. Compared with rivals like the BMW 3 Series Convertible or Volkswagen Eos, the Volvo C70 prioritises comfort, style and peace of mind.
The Volvo C70 comes with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, reinforced A-pillars and Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System (SIPS). Second-gen models perform well in safety tests – so you can feel secure even with the roof down.
The second-gen Volvo C70 offers 2.4 and 2.5-litre petrol engines (including the T5) and diesels like the 2.0D, D3, D4 and powerful D5. Both manual and automatic gearboxes were available. Earlier models featured older petrol and diesel options with simpler tech.
Even base models include dual-zone climate control and cruise control. Higher trims add leather seats and premium audio. Post-2012 cars introduced clearer infotainment screens, Bluetooth and optional LED lights on upper trims.
Petrol models return around 30–32mpg combined, while diesels can manage between 38–46mpg officially. In real-world driving – especially around town, where the Volvo C70’s weight has more impact – you can expect slightly lower returns. For 2010–2013 models, average real-world economy sits at around 38.9mpg.
Check the roof’s operation for smoothness and leaks, especially around the seals. On diesel models, ensure the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is healthy, particularly if the car was used mostly for short trips. Make sure all electrics, including infotainment and windows, work properly. For peace of mind, consider a thorough check with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
When serviced regularly, the Volvo C70 is generally reliable. Watch for issues with the roof mechanism, ageing electronics, and DPFs on diesels. The T5 engine is robust, but it benefits from consistent oil changes and proper maintenance.
