Overall rating 4.5/5The Volvo S80 is a large executive saloon that prioritises comfort, safety and a calm driving experience above all else. Owners often praise its solid handling, smooth cruising ability and wealth of standard technology. The S80 debuted in 1998, with the second generation arriving in 2006. The 2006–2016 models are the most common on the used market today. Against rivals such as the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, the S80 matches up well for safety features and cabin quality, though it doesn't have the same sporty handling. Inside, you’ll find supportive seats and a straightforward layout. Useful features – like advanced safety tech from 2012 onwards – and luxuries such as heated seats in higher trims make sure every drive is easy and comfortable. The S80 is best known for its robust build and reputation for passenger safety.
Volvo has a longstanding commitment to safety, and the S80 is no exception. Standard features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and City Safety (from 2012), which can help prevent low-speed collisions. Many models include side impact protection, blind spot monitoring and advanced seatbelt systems for added peace of mind.
The S80 offers a wide range of engines. Diesel choices are most popular, including 1.6-, 2.0-, and 2.4-litre D2, D3, D4, and D5 units. Earlier models feature larger petrols – up to a rare 4.4-litre V8 – but most drivers opt for efficient diesels. Later diesels (especially post-2011) offer better running costs and lower emissions.
Even base SE models are well-equipped, with dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels and electric windows as standard. Higher trims add leather, an upmarket stereo, navigation and extra safety tech. Later models feature Bluetooth, DAB radio and Volvo’s City Safety driver assistance suite. A heated seat 'Winter Pack' is popular and especially useful for UK driving.
Diesel S80s are the best choice for efficiency. The 1.6-litre D2 can officially return up to 62.8mpg, while the later D4 achieves up to 68.9mpg. Even earlier 2.4D and D5 models hover between 44-65mpg. Petrol engines are less economical, with some larger units dropping below 30mpg.
Pay close attention to diesel models: timing belt, pulleys and tensioners should be replaced every 60,000 miles or four years. Look for electrical warning lights and test the air conditioning. Interiors with pale trim can mark easily – check for stains. For peace of mind, book a service with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The S80 offers solid reliability if well maintained, though older Volvos may display minor electrical faults or more rapid tyre wear. According to surveys, Volvo as a brand sits mid-pack for reliability. Regular servicing and evidence of timing belt changes on diesels will keep most S80s running smoothly.
