Overall rating 4/5The Volvo V50 delivers a reassuring blend of safety, comfort and thoughtful detailing. Well known for its refined drive, paired with Volvo's signature understated styling, this estate car is perfect if you want smooth handling and a real sense of security for everyone on board. While interior space is a touch tighter than in some rivals like the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3-Series Touring, the V50 remains a practical choice with its flat loading lip, split-folding rear seats and options for integrated child booster seats. Facelifts in 2007 and 2010 added sharper looks and updated infotainment, further cementing this mid-size Swedish estate car's appeal for modern British drivers – especially ones with families in tow.
The Volvo V50 is built for safety, making it a top pick for families. Standard equipment includes multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control and Volvo's whiplash and side-impact protection. Optional extras include integrated child booster seats and active bi-xenon headlights.
The V50 engine range includes 1.6- and 2.0-litre diesels – some with Drive-E tech for better fuel economy – and petrol engines from 1.6-litre to 2.5-litre turbo (all-wheel drive) in the sporty T5 trim. From 2010 the 2.0-litre diesel options were the five-cylinder D3 or D4.
Most V50s come with climate control, a CD player and electric windows as standard. Higher trims add cruise control, integrated satnav and DAB audio. Later models have improved infotainment systems and optional Bluetooth.
The V50 diesel models are especially efficient, with official figures for the 1.6D Drive-E exceeding 70mpg (real-world around 50mpg). Larger diesels still manage over 40mpg, while petrol models generally fall between 30 and 35mpg in daily use. The 2.5 T5 is notably thirstier, especially around town.
Check for a full service history and evidence of completed recall work. Pay particular attention to the timing belt, the air conditioning condenser and any warning lights. Diesels may have DPF or Eolys fluid issues. For peace of mind, book The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The V50 has a good reputation for reliability and can last into higher mileages with regular maintenance. Some diesel models have had DPF and timing belt issues. Overall, the V50 is a sturdy estate with dependable underpinnings that will run for years with the right care.
