Diesel is still the default choice for many UK vans, especially if you cover big miles, carry heavier loads or tow regularly. A diesel van’s strength is its torque and strong motorway economy, which can make a real difference if your van spends most of its time on longer runs.

The trade-off is complexity. Modern diesels rely on emissions equipment such as DPFs and, on many models, AdBlue/urea systems. If you mainly do short, stop-start journeys, the engine may not get hot enough for the emissions system to work as intended, which can lead to warning lights and downtime. In that situation, petrol, hybrid or electric can sometimes fit better.

If you drive into London, ULEZ compliance is a key checkpoint. For diesel cars and light vans, you generally need the vehicle to meet the ULEZ emissions standard (Euro 6), and larger vans up to 3.5 tonnes followed shortly after, so it’s important to check the individual vehicle rather than guessing by age.
