MPV buying guide

MPV vans sit between a car and a van. They are built to carry people in comfort, with flexible seating and enough space for luggage or equipment. In the UK used market you will see everything from car-based MPVs to van-based shuttles with sliding doors, so start by deciding what matters most: number of seats, boot space with all seats in place, and how easily the layout can be changed.

Check the seating and safety features carefully. Make sure every seat locks into place properly, seatbelts retract cleanly, and there are no warning lights for airbags or seat sensors. If the vehicle has been used for private hire or shuttle work, expect higher wear in door runners, seat fabric, brakes and suspension, even if the bodywork looks tidy.

Before you buy, confirm how many passenger seats it has and how it is recorded on the V5C. Anything with more than 8 passenger seats moves into minibus territory, which can affect licensing, insurance and how you use it.
