Overall rating 4.5/5The Hyundai i30 lies within a very competitive segment of the car market, rivalling cars like the Volkswagen Golf and BMW 1 Series. Where this Hyundai differs, however, is through its value-for-money orientation which has seen it loaded with standard equipment while being offered at some very reasonable prices.
As a result, it’s a relatively inexpensive one to buy second-hand but remains a car that delivers well in terms of space and practicality, as well as efficiency. The most recent version of the i30 was introduced in 2017 and continues to be sold today. This makes this generation of i30 one of the most popular versions on the used market.

The Hyundai i30 was most recently crash-tested in 2017 when it was launched. Euro NCAP awarded it a five-star rating at the time, too, and scored it 88 and 84 per cent for adult and child occupant safety respectively. It gets a good selection of airbags as standard, too, as well as ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats. Plus, the i30 is equipped with a variety of autonomous safety functions, such as automatic emergency braking which can help avoid collisions during city driving.
Petrol-wise things are covered by 1.0-, 1.4- and 2.0-litre units. Later models come equipped with mild-hybrid assistance for improved efficiency, so look out for these if you’re after even lower running costs. There was also a 1.6-litre diesel available on earlier versions of the i30, while later models see this switched out for a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid variant instead.
All versions of the i30 get a good level of standard equipment, with entry-level S models equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and alloy wheels, while those autonomous safety assistance features are included on all cars too. One of the best standard features that the i30 benefits from is a five-year transferable warranty. That means you could get a later model with some of this cover intact, making running costs lower.
None of the i30’s engines will prove too costly to run. You could see up to 48.7mpg from 1.4-litre-powered versions, while the compact 1.0-litre can return up to 51.4mpg. However, it’s the diesel version that will be the best option for higher-distance drivers, as it’s able to return up to 58.9mpg. Later mild-hybrid versions improve things further.
The i30 has a good reputation when it comes to reliability, but as with any family hatchback, it’s a good idea to check it over for the usual damage that comes with day-to-day life. Check over wheels and tyres and make sure that the servicing schedule has been kept to. For a clearer picture of any car you’re considering, try an AA vehicle inspection. A trained engineer will look at the car for you and highlight any potential issues that they may find with the vehicle.
Yes. Hyundai’s five-year warranty reflects the trust that the brand has in the reliability of its cars, so you shouldn’t have too many headaches when it comes to the mechanicals of the i30. As with all cars, regular maintenance - or a history of this - is a must when it comes to keeping a car in the best-possible condition. Again, an AA vehicle inspection can help to provide extra information about a used i30 that you’re considering the purchase of.
The Hyundai i30 has a wide range of engines, spanning from a 1.0-litre petrol through to a more powerful 2.0-litre petrol in the performance i30N model.
