Overall rating 4.5/5While the Hyundai ix20 may be small, it delivers a lot of room. Despite its compact proportions, the ix20 affords a lot of boot space, too, with far more luggage room on offer than a typical supermini or compact hatchback.
There is space for five people in the ix20 and, thanks to the rear seats being on a sliding mechanism, you can adjust how much focus you want to put on either legroom or boot space. Plus, the ix20’s boxy, upright design means that there’s plenty of space for even taller adults to get comfortable.
The Hyundai ix20 comes fully equipped with an electronic stability control system and a suite of airbags as standard. The high seating position means that shorter drivers will have a more commanding and confidence-inspiring view of the road ahead, too. When crash-tested in 2011 the Hyundai ix20 was awarded a full five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP.
There are three engines to choose from with the Hyundai ix20 - two petrol and one diesel. The 1.4-litre petrol is the one which kicks off the range and this is followed up by a more powerful 1.6-litre engine for those who need extra performance. Then there’s a 1.4-litre diesel engine available with a six-speed manual gearbox. If you want an automatic, you’ll need to go for the more powerful petrol engine.
Classic, Active and Style trim levels are available with the ix20 and you’ll find plenty of standard equipment included regardless of which one you choose. Earlier versions of the ix20 get a radio and standard speaker system while on later editions you’ll find this has been switched out for a more modern screen. The ix20 was facelifted in 2015 and at this point, the specifications were bolstered with more standard equipment with features such as Bluetooth connectivity being included on all cars.
The 1.6-litre diesel brings the best fuel consumption at 64.2mpg, so it’s the best bet for those looking to reduce fuel costs. Those ix20 cars fitted with 1.4-litre petrol have a claimed consumption figure of 47.1mpg, while the larger 1.6-litre should return 43.6mpg.
Some trim elements inside the ix20 are made from rather scratchy plastics, so make sure that these haven’t been damaged or marked on any car you’re looking at. Likewise, check over the rear seats of the car to double-check that they haven’t been stained, and that the sliding mechanism works as it should. An AA Vehicle inspection can help to bring even greater clarity to a used car purchase. With it, a technician will check over any vehicle you’re looking at and provide more detail on some of the issues that may be present on it.
As with other Hyundai models, the ix20 is a very reliable choice and shouldn’t present too many issues providing that it is routinely serviced. However, if you’d like more information about a car you’re looking at then an AA vehicle inspection can help to provide greater detail while highlighting any potential problems.
The ix20 is available with engines ranging in size from 1.4-litre petrol to 1.6-litre diesels.
