Overall rating 4/5The Hyundai Getz was built to take the stress out of everyday driving – with plenty of space for passengers, a straightforward cabin and wallet-friendly costs. It’s been top of many first-time buyers' lists for many years, and the same goes for those simply in the market for an honest motor on a budget. Launched in 2002 and running until 2009, the Getz offered a refreshing alternative to rivals like the Citroën C3 and Ford Fiesta. Choose from a mix of petrol and diesel engines, all tuned for comfort and efficiency. Higher-spec CDX models brought added kit at a competitive price. Today, the Getz stands out for its generous boot and impressively roomy back seats – especially for such a small car.
Many early models came with driver and passenger airbags as standard, and most had ABS, which became standard on later cars. So, while it meets essential safety needs, newer rivals may boast more cutting-edge systems.
The Getz gives you a fair choice of petrol engines — 1.1, 1.3, 1.4 or 1.6 litres — or you could grab a diesel with a 1.5 CRTD in two flavours. Around 2005, the 1.3 and 1.6 made way for the 1.4, but if squeezing every mile from a tank is your thing, the diesel might be the way to go.
Most Getz models feature basics like a CD player, power steering and electric windows. Higher trims add remote locking, side airbags and air conditioning. Don’t expect cutting-edge infotainment, but you’ll get the essentials for daily life.
Fuel consumption depends on the engine, but the 1.1 petrol manages up to 51.4 mpg, while the 1.5 diesel can reach 62.8 mpg. The 1.6 petrol returns around 44 mpg, so there’s a good mix of options if you want to save at the pumps.
Look out for signs of worn interior trim, noisy rear brakes and a full service history. Pay close attention to the brakes and ensure all electrics work as they should. Cleanse yourself of any niggling doubt with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Getz is thought of as a reliable car, often doing very well in owner surveys on the topic. Plus, Hyundai’s trusted warranty and track record of affordable, straightforward repairs tends to make owning Getz a worry-free experience.
