What's an MOT?

The MOT test is a legally-required inspection of your vehicle, covering dozens of checks from your lights to your tyres. If your vehicle’s more than 3 years old, you’ll need to get it tested every year.

Getting your annual MOT test:

    • Makes sure your car is roadworthy, keeping you and other drivers safe.
    • Keeps your car insurance valid.
    • Can help spot any problems with your car early on – which could save you money later down the line.

How do I book an MOT near me?

We have a growing network of more than 500 AA approved garages, so it’s likely we’ll have one near you. And if you need an MOT fast, we even have next-day availability in some locations.

If you don't have time to drop your car off at the garage, use our free collect and return service. A fully insured driver will pick your car up on the morning of your appointment and drop it back to your door once the work is done.

Just enter your number plate and postcode above to begin making your booking.

How can I find out my vehicle's MOT due date?

Enter your registration number and postcode at the top of this page. We'll tell you when your vehicle's MOT is due and you'll be able to book at an approved garage near you.

Can I book an MOT for tomorrow?

If you need an MOT quickly, many of our garages have next-day availability. With more than 500 garages nationwide, it's likely we'll have one near you too. Check live availability by entering your number plate and postcode above.

Can I drive a car with no MOT?

It’s illegal to drive a vehicle without a valid MOT certificate and you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do. If your vehicle was found to have 'dangerous' defects and you continue to drive it, the fine increases to £2,500.

The only exception is you can drive your car to or from a pre-arranged MOT appointment – or to or from a pre-arranged repair appointment to have defects fixed that were identified on a previous test – as long as no 'dangerous' defects were found.

How can I check a vehicle's MOT history?

If you're thinking of purchasing a pre-owned vehicle, it's a good idea to check its MOT history for any defects and advisory notes.

You can do this on the government's MOT history page.

How far in advance can I book an MOT?
You can book an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out, and keep the same renewal date. If you want to renew your vehicle’s MOT earlier than this, you can – but the MOT certificate will then be valid for 12 months from the new test date.
Which documents do I need for an MOT?

To get an MOT certificate, your vehicle must be registered with the DVLA, taxed and insured. Garages can now access all the documents they'll need online, so there’s no need to take any documents along with you.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

If your vehicle fails its MOT, you'll need to get any 'dangerous' defects fixed and then get your car retested.

If you book through the AA, we'll carry out any essential work (at the same garage) within 10 days and do a retest free of charge. If you choose to take your car elsewhere for repairs, you can return it to us within 10 days and we’ll retest it for only £15.

If you believe your vehicle has been unfairly failed, you can appeal the decision.
