What is motorbike breakdown cover?

Motorbike breakdown cover is a type of policy that means you’ll get Roadside Assistance from a trained mechanic if your motorbike breaks down more than 1/4 mile from your home.

Our expert patrols are skilled at fixing various motorbike issues, whether you’ve got a problem with the battery, tyres, throttle or anything else, we’re here to help.

Having motorbike breakdown cover with us means you’ll get:

  • Cover for motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and L-plate learner bikes, as long as they’re road legal and only used for personal and domestic journeys
  • An expert mechanic sent straight to your location to try and fix your motorcycle, scooter or moped on the spot
  • Motorcycle recovery and a lift to a nearby garage if your motorbike can’t be fixed by the roadside
  • Convenience when you break down – most of our vans can carry motorbikes so you usually won't have to wait for a recovery truck
  • Unlimited call-outs with no extra cost (as long as it's not a repeat call-out for the same fault within 28 days)
  • The ability to customise your cover so it meets your needs and budget

At Home

If your vehicle won't start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of your home, you'll get a recovery tow to a nearby garage.

National Recovery

If you break down and we can't fix your vehicle at the roadside, we'll take you, your vehicle and up to 7 passengers to any single UK destination, subject to policy terms and vehicle eligibility. This is handy to have if you travel far away from home.

Onward Travel

If you break down and need repairs that stop your journey, we’ll help with alternative transport or overnight accommodation.

Parts and Garage Cover

How does motorcycle breakdown cover work?

Contact The AA

Use The AA App or give us a call to report your breakdown and get assistance. With the app, you'll get real-time updates, and you can track the arrival of the breakdown service.

An experienced patrol will try to fix the problem at the roadside

Our expert patrols will aim to fix your motorbike at the roadside if you break down more than ¼ mile from home. If you have At Home cover, they’ll come right to your address.

If we can’t get you going, we’ll tow you to a local garage

If we can’t fix the problem at the roadside, we’ll transport your motorbike to a local garage for further assistance. If you have National Recovery, we’ll take you to a destination of your choice.

Things to consider when looking for motorcycle breakdown cover

When comparing motorcycle breakdown cover, it's worth looking beyond the price to make sure you're choosing a policy that suits your needs.

Here are some key things to consider:

  • The level of cover you need – think about how and where you use your motorbike. Roadside assistance may be enough for shorter, local journeys, while options such as national recovery, assistance at home or onward travel can provide extra reassurance if you regularly take longer trips.
  • Response times and roadside repairs – when comparing breakdown cover providers, look at how quickly they aim to reach you and their roadside repair rate. It’s also worth checking if motorcycle recovery is included in the event your motorbike can’t be fixed at the roadside.
  • Types of motorbikes covered – make sure your motorcycle, scooter, moped or L-plate learner bike is eligible. Providers may have different requirements or restrictions relating to factors such as vehicle age, size, weight and engine size.
  • Policy exclusions – check the terms carefully for common exclusions, such as repeat call-outs for the same fault, pre-existing problems or bikes used solely off-road.
  • Personal vs vehicle cover – if you own both a car and a motorbike, personal breakdown cover could be a good option, as it covers you as a driver or passenger in any eligible vehicle. If your partner or other people in your household also need motorcycle breakdown cover, check whether joint or family cover offers a more suitable option than separate individual policies.

How do I get a motorcycle breakdown cover quote?

Buying motorbike breakdown cover with us is easy, here’s how to do it:

  • Hit the ‘Get a quote’ button
  • Enter your home postcode and date of birth, then choose what sort of cover you need
  • Pick vehicle cover to cover one motorcycle or personal cover (which applies to any vehicle) and submit your details
  • See your personalised quote, then select ‘Continue’ to go to the Options step

Can I save money with motorcycle breakdown cover?

If you only need breakdown cover for your motorbike, vehicle cover is usually the cheapest option. If you also drive a car or often travel as a passenger in one, personal cover is often the better-value option.

How do you use my data?

To find out how we use your data, please read our website privacy notice and our specific roadside product privacy notice.

For more information, there’s also our cookie policy and website terms and conditions.

Our breakdown cover includes motorcycles as well as cars, vans, caravans and campervans. You won’t need a special policy for motorcycle breakdown cover. Both motorbike breakdown cover and car breakdown cover work in exactly the same way:

  • You can call for help 24/7, 365 days a year if you have a breakdown.
  • A mechanic will come to you at the roadside to look at your vehicle.
  • If it can’t be fixed there and then, you and your vehicle will be taken to a garage.

Plus you can customise your policy to cover you at home, to help with onward travel or to recover you to anywhere in the UK.

All our highly skilled mobile mechanics are fully trained in how to spot common motorcycle problems. And our cutting-edge technology helps us get vehicles going again at the roadside.

Our standard breakdown cover doesn’t include parts, but you can add Parts and Garage Cover to your policy.

It can:

  • Pay for many of the spare parts we use to fix your bike at the roadside that we'd normally charge you for
  • Or pay for work that's done in a garage after a breakdown

You're covered for 5 claims per policy year (6 claims if you cover more than 1 vehicle on a joint or family policy).

Each time, you can claim up to £535 worth of repairs (including a £35 excess) – just give us a call before any garage work is started.

You’ll be covered for common vehicle parts like the engine and brakes, as well as specific motorcycle parts like the drive chain, sprockets and forks.

You can either cover a specific vehicle with vehicle cover, or you can cover yourself in any vehicle as a driver or passenger with personal breakdown cover. You’d be able to use your personal breakdown cover to call for help even when riding pillion on a friend’s motorbike. If you break down while driving with a pillion passenger, we’ll also take them to the garage if needed.

The following vehicles aren’t covered:

  • Electric pavement vehicles
  • Electric wheelchairs
  • Bicycles (including electric bicycles)
  • Motocross bikes (dirt bikes)

If you have personal cover (including joint and family cover), you’re automatically covered for any vehicle you travel in. That means your motorbike will be included if you have existing personal cover.

If you have vehicle cover, you’ll only be able to cover 1 vehicle. So, if your motorbike wasn’t the original vehicle you covered, you won’t be able to add it to a vehicle cover policy.

For Parts and Garage Cover, you can cover up to 4 vehicles on a single policy, as long as they're all registered at the same address.

Yes, our breakdown cover includes cover for tyre damage and punctures.

After you report a breakdown, a patrol will fit your spare or temporarily fix your tyre so you can drive safely. If that's not possible, we'll recover your vehicle to a garage. You'll need to pay for the tyre repair or replacement yourself.

If you have Tyre Cover on your breakdown cover policy, we'll reimburse you for up to £160 towards each tyre after your claim is approved.

Breakdown cover will only cover you in the UK. But we do have an arrangement with AA Ireland. This means you’ll get an equivalent level of service if you break down there (apart from Parts and Garage Cover, which won't apply).

If you’re driving in Europe or want extra cover travelling in the Republic of Ireland, you might want European Breakdown Cover. It can give you alternative travel and accommodation costs, legal protection and more.

You can check our prices for motorcycle breakdown cover, the way you tailor you cover will change the cost of your policy.

You can build your perfect breakdown cover package depending on your needs and financial situation.

If you use your motorcycle for business (as a bike courier, for example) and want to get it covered, you'll need to buy Commercial Use.

Motorcycle insurance usually doesn’t include breakdown cover, so it’s best to check with your provider.

If you don’t have cover included with your insurance but you want to receive help from a mechanic if your bike breaks down, you’ll need to take out a separate breakdown cover policy.

Yes, mopeds and scooters that are road-legal are covered by our breakdown cover policies. But if you use your vehicle for any commercial purpose, like making deliveries, you'll need to add Commercial Use to your breakdown cover.

Yes. Our breakdown cover includes eligible motorbikes as well as cars, vans and other vehicles, so you don’t need to buy a separate type of breakdown policy just because you ride a motorcycle.

A courtesy or rental vehicle isn’t included with our standard Roadside Assistance. If you add Onward Travel and your motorbike can’t be repaired at the roadside and needs to go to a garage, you may be able to get a rental car for up to 3 days, subject to the policy terms and eligibility requirements.

Standard Roadside Assistance covers breakdowns more than 1/4 mile from your home. If you add At Home to your breakdown cover, you’ll also get help if your motorbike won’t start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of home.

You get unlimited call-outs with AA motorbike breakdown cover, subject to our policy terms. However, repeat call-outs for the same fault within 28 days aren’t covered unless you can provide evidence that a permanent repair has been completed by a garage. Your call-out levels may also affect future premiums.

Yes. With AA breakdown cover, learners are covered for an eligible, road-legal motorcycle, moped or scooter. The bike will need to meet our usual vehicle eligibility requirements, and you can choose the level of breakdown cover that suits your needs.

You can choose between personal and vehicle breakdown cover. Personal cover protects you as a rider or passenger in any eligible vehicle, so it can be useful if you drive a car as well as ride a motorbike. Vehicle cover protects one specific motorcycle, no matter who’s riding it.

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.

If you’ve got vehicle cover, change your vehicle details as soon as you can.

With single, joint or family personal cover, you'll only need to change your vehicle details if you have Commercial Use or Parts and Garage Cover added to your policy.

It's simple to change your vehicle details online, and we’ll check that your new vehicle is eligible (terms and conditions apply).

We'll help with breakdowns that happen from 24 hours after you’ve updated us.

If you have Tyre Cover, you’ll only be able to claim for tyre repairs or replacements after the first 7 days.

If you have Parts and Garage Cover, you’ll only be able to claim for new faults that occur after the first 14 days.
