How much does it cost to replace a car key?

It can cost an average of £300* to replace car keys in the UK, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. But with Key Cover, we take care of the replacement cost for any lost, stolen or broken car or house keys for £3 a month or £36 a year. 
How do I make a claim for lost, stolen or broken car or house keys?

It’s easy to make a claim if you’re locked out or need to replace your keys.

Simply call our 24/7 helpline on 0345 303 4023 to make a claim.

We’ll ask you the circumstances of lost or stolen keys, so that we can take the best course of action for your situation.

Please note, you cannot make a claim within the first 14 days of your cover.

Can I make a claim immediately after purchasing my policy?

Do I have to pay before I can make a claim?

We’ll normally pay for your insured expenses upfront so you won’t have to pay any money.

In some situations you may need to pay these expenses and claim the costs back from us (up to your remaining policy entitlement). We will tell you if we need you to do this.

If so, you’ll need to submit your receipts to the following address no more than 120 days after the insured event took place; Keycare Limited, 2-3 Quayside House, Quayside, Salts Mill Road, Shipley, West Yorkshire, BD18 3ST. 

What excess do I need to pay on my policy for a lost, stolen or broken key?

There is no excess on any claims you make under Key Cover. We’ll settle the cost of your claim directly, except where we specify otherwise. 
How many times a year can I make a claim?

You can claim several times during your period of cover, as long as the total cover paid out doesn’t exceed £2,500. 
How long does it take to get a replacement car or house key?

It depends on the situation or the key you need. We do stock some keys, but we may need to order other keys directly from the manufacturer.  
If my keys are lost or stolen while I’m on holiday, can I make a claim?

We cover lost or stolen keys anywhere in the world.

Our locksmith network only covers the UK, so you’ll have to arrange for a locksmith to attend the incident yourself whilst abroad or wait until you are back in the UK.

If you need a locksmith abroad, keep the original receipts for reimbursements. 

If my house and/or car keys are stolen from my handbag, will this affect my no claims discount if I make a claim for replacement locks?

No, this won’t be affected as we won’t seek a contribution from your household or car insurance policies.
If I lock myself out of my car or house at night, can you help?

If you already have Key Cover, our helpline is available 24/7 so yes, we’ll be able to assist you in most cases.
Can a locksmith be sent to my place of work or other location?

Yes, we can arrange an appointment at an alternative location providing there are no height or other restrictions to your vehicle. You may need to provide proof of ownership, such as a vehicle registration (V5C) or any relevant document. 
What type of keys are covered through my Key Cover policy?

We cover any type of car or house keys, including smart keys and fobs.  
Do you cover broken keys and locks?

Yes, we cover broken keys and locks that have been broken by keys. We don’t cover faulty locks or ignitions on their own.
Can you help me with a hire car or travel costs if I can’t use my vehicle?

Yes, we’ll pay for up to three days vehicle hire or £250 towards travel costs if your vehicle is unusable as a result of lost, stolen or broken keys. You can hire a vehicle from a firm of your choice, but you must get authorisation from us first. We’ll assess each claim individually.
If I’m stranded with my family or friends, can they also claim travel costs?

Cover towards a hire car or travel costs is only available for the policyholder(s), so it depends whether your family members are included in your breakdown cover policy.
Do my keys need to be attached to the provided fob to be covered?

We do recommend attaching your keys to the provided fob for safety, but it won’t affect your claim if your keys weren’t attached to your fob when you lost them.
