How does electric car breakdown cover work?

Our breakdown cover includes EV and hybrid vehicles, with no extra premium to pay. We’ll send one of our expert patrols to fix the problem, whether it’s a flat battery, a punctured tyre or any other problem.

If our patrol can’t fix your car by the roadside, they’ll take your vehicle to a local garage for further repairs. Here are some features of electric car breakdown cover:

  • Our standard level of breakdown cover, also known as Roadside Assistance, means you’ll be covered for breakdowns that happen more than 1/4 mile away from your home, or use The AA app to easily find EV charge points
  • Our High Voltage Awareness trained patrols will come to you whether you drive a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery electric vehicle
  • Customise your policy with options like At Home, which covers you within 1/4 mile of your home, or National Recovery, which takes you and your vehicle to your destination in the event of a breakdown

Do you need breakdown cover for an electric car?

Having AA breakdown cover is important because it means you can have peace of mind knowing that help is just a call away if your electric vehicle breaks down.

Combustion cars can break down for a number of reasons, including problems with the engine, battery or because of using the wrong fuel. However, some combustion car breakdown causes can also apply to electric vehicles, like flat tyres for example.

Electric vehicles breakdown causes are usually related to the battery. Whether it's a sudden loss of charge or problems with the battery management system, these issues can leave you stuck without the right support. Luckily, our expert patrols are able to handle issues with either type of vehicle.

Are electric cars more reliable?

Electric cars can be viewed as more reliable depending on your needs. They require less maintenance because they don’t need oil changes or exhaust system repairs. However, they can have their own problems, like battery wear over time, limited driving range, and the need for charging stations. The reliability of an electric car varies based on the brand, model, and how well it's maintained, much like petrol and diesel cars.

Can you manually push an electric car?

Yes, you can manually push an electric car. Before you do anything make sure it's in neutral and the parking brake is off. Check your owner's manual for specific instructions. Have someone in the driver’s seat to steer and control the brakes. Push on a flat surface to avoid extra risks.

What is a High Voltage Awareness trained expert?

All our patrols are qualified to attend, diagnose and carry out repairs on electric and hybrid vehicles. Repairs to high voltage (HV) batteries can't be completed at the roadside, but our patrols are qualified to make HV systems safe for recovery and further diagnosis.

Do you need a special breakdown cover policy for an electric car?

No. Your breakdown cover with us includes electric and hybrid vehicles, not just petrol and diesel ones. That means you don't need a different policy if you drive an electric car.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.
