How can I customise my AA breakdown cover?

You'll get Roadside Assistance as standard, but you can customise your cover to fit your needs – giving you more choices in the event of a breakdown. Whether it's a quick fix at the roadside or recovery to a garage, we've got you covered.

At Home

If your vehicle won't start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of your home, you'll get breakdown recovery to a nearby garage. This extends our Roadside Assistance coverage straight to your door.

National Recovery

If you break down and we can't fix your vehicle at the roadside. We'll take you, your vehicle and up to 7 passengers to any single UK destination.

Onward Travel

If you break down and need repairs that stop your journey. We'll help with alternative transport or an overnight hotel stay.

Parts and Garage Cover

If you need repairs or work done at a garage after calling us out for a breakdown. We'll cover costs up to £535.

What is multi-car breakdown cover?

Personal cover is our name for multi-car cover. It applies to any vehicle you travel in as a driver or a passenger. That way, you can be covered in multiple vehicles.

It could be a good option if you want breakdown cover for 2 or more cars. It also applies to other vehicles like vans or motorbikes.

You can tell us the names of anyone you’d like to include in your cover. But you won’t need to give us vehicle details as you’ll be covered in any vehicle.

Cover for you

Covers you as a driver or passenger in any vehicle. It may suit you if:

  • You sometimes drive different cars.
  • Your household has more than one car.

Other people won't be covered if they drive the car without you. But you can add other people to your policy with joint or family cover.

Personal breakdown cover

Cover for two people

Joint cover for you and someone you live with, as drivers or passengers in any vehicle.

You can add someone else to your personal cover as long as you both live at the same address. We'll rescue either of you if any car you're in breaks down.

Joint breakdown cover

Family cover

Family cover for you and up to 3 other people you live with, as drivers or passengers in any vehicle.

You can add people to your personal cover as long as you all live at the same address. You can even add students who are temporarily living away from home.

Family breakdown cover

Vehicle Cover

Covers one vehicle, whoever's behind the wheel. We'll come out to fix the car even if the person who owns it isn't there. It may suit you if:

  • You only drive one car
  • Your household shares one car

If you want breakdown cover for 2 cars (or more), personal cover offers this.

Find out why we're rated the best breakdown cover provider.

Is it cheaper to have a multi-car policy?

When it comes to breakdown cover, it would most likely work out cheaper to have a personal cover policy if you drive more than one vehicle – compared to paying for breakdown cover for each vehicle separately. If you only drive one vehicle, however, you'll get a cheaper quote by going for singular vehicle cover.

Pros and cons of personal cover vs vehicle cover

Wondering whether you should choose a breakdown cover policy for multiple vehicles (like our personal-based cover policies) or just standard vehicle cover for one car? See the table below for a breakdown of the benefits of each one.

What’s included? Personal breakdown cover Vehicle cover
Cover in any vehicle

Cover as a passenger in someone else’s car

Cover for your car if someone else is driving and you’re not a passenger*

Unlimited call-outs, as long as it’s not a recurring problem

24/7 Roadside Assistance if you’re more than 1/4 mile from home

Ability to add more people to your policy

*If the person driving also hasn’t been added to your personal breakdown cover policy

How do I get multi-car breakdown cover?

You can get multi-car breakdown cover with us by choosing one of our personal-based policies, like Cover for you. This way, you’ll be covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle. You can also get cover for multiple people you live with for any vehicle under our Joint and Family cover options.

What types of vehicles are covered?

Our policies cover cars, vans, motorbikes, caravans, motorhomes, campervans and also trailers – providing that they don’t exceed our size and weight requirements. Your vehicle or trailer must be no more than 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) and 8ft 3in (2.55m) wide.

You can call us out for a problem with your trailer or caravan, even if your car or main vehicle is fine.

The following vehicles are covered:

  • car
  • motorbike
  • van
  • caravan
  • motorhome
  • campervan
  • trailer
  • scooter
  • truck
  • supercar
Vehicles will only be covered if they fall within the size and weight requirements (no more than 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg and no more than 8ft 3in or 2.55m wide).

Paying for your cover
How can I pay?

There are 3 ways to do this – annually by card or direct debit, or monthly by direct debit.

If you pay annually, you’ll pay up front for a fixed 12-month policy and the overall price for a year will be lower than 12 monthly payments. There’s no refund if you cancel after your 14-day cooling-off period though. Your policy will automatically renew each year unless it's cancelled.

If you pay monthly, your account will be debited every month until your policy is cancelled. This gives you the convenience of paying per month, together with the flexibility of being able to cancel your cover at any time. After the 14-day cooling-off period, you'll just need to give us 30 days' notice.

We only offer continuous payment options online. However, if you want to make a one-off payment for a year of cover, call us on 0330 053 1100.

Is my online payment secure?

Yes – we use the highest form of encryption available, to make sure your payment is safe.

Our secure-server software scrambles all the details you enter before they’re sent, so that only we can understand them.

Can I change my level of cover after I've bought it?

We'll write to you well in advance of your renewal, but if you'd like to talk to someone about renewing or changing your cover now, call us on 0343 316 4444.

Lines are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm.

Can I buy breakdown cover for someone else?

If you want to arrange personal cover for someone else, call us on 0330 053 1100 . However, if you want to cover a specific vehicle you can buy vehicle cover online.

Are multi-car cover and family cover the same?

If you’d like to be covered in multiple vehicles, then our policies offering personal cover might suit you. We don't call it multi-car cover, but you'll be covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle.

If you only want cover for yourself in multiple vehicles, then you can choose cover for you. If you’d like to cover more than 1 person in multiple vehicles, then you might want to choose family breakdown cover.

With family cover, you can add up to 3 other people to your personal cover, as long as everyone lives at the same address. That could include your:

  • Partner
  • Family members
  • Housemates
  • Children - even if they're students temporarily living away from home

Can multiple cars have Parts and Garage Cover?

If you have personal, joint or family cover along with Parts and Garage Cover, you can add up to 4 cars onto 1 policy.

Just let us know which vehicles you want to include.

Am I covered in Europe?
Our policies only cover you if you break down in the UK. If you'd like to be covered abroad, you'll need to get European breakdown cover.

Can I add another car to my breakdown cover?

If you’re on a single vehicle policy, then your best option for adding another car to your breakdown cover is to switch to a personal breakdown cover policy. By choosing our cover for you policy, you’ll be covered in any car as a driver or passenger.

Can you get breakdown cover for 2 cars?
Yes, you can get breakdown cover for 2 cars by choosing a personal-based breakdown cover policy – like our Cover for you, Joint or Family Cover options, depending on how many people you live with that you’d like to cover for the 2 cars.
Can I use my breakdown cover for another car?
Yes, you can use your breakdown cover for another car providing that you’re already on a personal breakdown cover policy. You won’t be able to use your breakdown cover for another vehicle if you’re on a single-vehicle cover policy, but you can always switch to a personal one.
Can I add my partner to my AA membership?
Yes, you can add your partner to your AA membership providing that you both live at the same address. Just call us on 0343 316 4444 and we'll help.
Does breakdown cover include the person or car?
It depends on the type of breakdown cover you choose. You can choose a personal-based breakdown cover policy which will cover you as a driver or passenger in any car, or you can choose to have breakdown cover for one vehicle only.
