What is family breakdown cover?

Family breakdown cover is a type of personal breakdown cover policy that protects you and up to 3 other people you live with under one membership, in any eligible vehicle as either drivers or passengers. It's ideal for couples or families who want one policy for roadside assistance.

If the people you live with are driving to work or getting a lift with a friend, you’ll have peace of mind knowing they’re fully covered.

Having family breakdown cover means:

  • You can add family members, a partner, housemates and even children – including students living elsewhere during term time
  • Everyone on the policy is covered in any eligible vehicle (including cars, motorbikes and vans) whether they’re driving or a passenger
  • You’ll get recovery to a garage if your vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside
  • Anyone covered under your family breakdown cover policy needs to live at the same address as you

How does family breakdown cover work?

Family breakdown cover covers you and up to 3 people you live with. If anyone on your policy breaks down over 1/4 mile from home, our patrol will attempt to fix the vehicle at the roadside.

Get assistance when you need it

Breaking down in a vehicle as a passenger is stressful, but with our personal breakdown cover, you're always protected. No matter who's driving, our team will help you.

Contact The AA

Use The AA App or give us a call to report your breakdown and get assistance. With the app, you'll get real-time updates, and you can track the arrival of the breakdown service.

An experienced patrol will try to fix the problem at the roadside

If anyone on your policy breaks down over 1/4 mile from home, our patrol will attempt to fix the vehicle at the roadside.

If we can’t get you going, we’ll tow you to a local garage

If we can’t fix the problem, we’ll take your vehicle to a local garage for further assistance.

What's the difference between family cover and multi-car breakdown cover?

Our version of multi-car breakdown cover is called personal cover. With standard personal cover, you as an individual are covered no matter what vehicle you’re in (whether you’re a driver or a passenger).

With family cover, you and up to 3 other people you live with are covered no matter what vehicle you’re in (whether you’re a driver or a passenger). So, to ensure you’re covered in multiple cars or vehicles with The AA, select ‘Personal cover’. And if you want the whole family covered, tick the ‘Family’ box.

Things to consider when looking for family breakdown cover

When comparing breakdown cover for families, it’s important to look beyond price and check what’s included.

Here are some key things to consider:

  • How many people are covered – some policies only cover one driver, while household breakdown cover can protect multiple family members living at the same address.
  • Cover in any vehicle – this is useful if different people drive different cars, or if you borrow or share vehicles.
  • Roadside assistance and home start – think about whether you want to be covered for breakdowns at home as well as on the road.
  • Recovery distance – check how far you and your family can be towed after a breakdown.
  • Optional add-ons – extras like national recovery, onward travel or European cover may be useful for family trips and longer journeys.

The best family roadside assistance gives everyone in your household reliable cover, whenever and wherever they travel.

The best family roadside assistance gives everyone in your household reliable cover, whenever and wherever they travel.

Is vehicle breakdown cover also suitable for families?

Vehicle breakdown cover applies to just 1 vehicle, while family breakdown cover covers your family, regardless of the car they’re driving. Families with only 1 vehicle who don't mind not being covered when traveling in their friend’s vehicles, vehicle breakdown cover might be the perfect fit.

At Home

If your vehicle won't start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of your home, you'll get a recovery tow to a nearby garage.

Onward Travel

If you break down and need repairs that stop your journey, we’ll help with alternative transport or overnight accommodation.

Our family breakdown cover protects you and up to 3 other people you live with. These can include family members, a partner and children – including students living elsewhere during term time.

With family breakdown cover, we’ll help whether you’re travelling by motorbike, car, or a small to medium van for everyday domestic use. Your vehicle is covered if it’s within:

  • 3.5 tonnes in gross vehicle weight
  • 2.55 metres in width
  • 7 metres in length

If you’d like protection for a commercial vehicle, you’ll need to add Commercial Use to your policy. With this, you can include up to 3 vehicles for both private and business use – and you’ll still be covered as a driver or passenger in any non-commercial vehicle.

No, personal breakdown cover only covers the individual named on the policy. For family coverage, you need to get a family breakdown cover policy, which covers up to 3 people you live with.

No, you cannot use another family member’s breakdown cover if you are not named on their policy. Each member must be covered under the policy to receive assistance. For comprehensive coverage, consider a family breakdown cover policy that covers the people you live with.

Yes, you can add your child to your AA membership. With family breakdown cover, you can include children that live at the same address as you, as well as those who live away from home during term time. This means they’ll be covered in any vehicle they’re in, even if they're just a passenger in someone else's car. This cover also applies to young children who aren’t old enough to drive. If you're a Silver member, your children aged 17 and under are covered at no additional cost.

Yes, you can add a non-family member to your breakdown cover. Family breakdown cover is designed to be flexible, allowing you to include additional members who live at the same address, regardless of their relationship to you. This means you can add friends, housemates, or other non-family members to your policy.

Once they’re registered on the membership they will become a member. They will be able to log into the app where they can access their membership card and details. They will need to confirm membership number and confirm their home address to receive service.

Learner drivers can be covered under family breakdown cover, if they’re included in the policy. This means that if they experience a breakdown while practicing their driving, they'll get assistance.

You can call us out to a breakdown as many times as you need to each year, as long as it’s not a recurring problem with your vehicle (repeat call-outs for the same fault within 28 days will not be covered).

Unfortunately, if the person is not on your policy, then they won’t be covered.

Yes, your family members will be covered even if they break down in someone else's car. The cover applies to any vehicle they are driving or traveling in. Your family is protected no matter whose vehicle they are in.

Yes. We’ll take your payment each month until you choose to cancel your cover. It’s a simple way to spread the cost, with the freedom to cancel whenever you like. After your 14-day cooling-off period, just give us 30 days’ notice. If your monthly price changes, we’ll always let you know at least 45 days in advance – so you’ll have plenty of time to decide whether to stay or make a change.

No, our recovery vehicles don’t have child seats – you will need to provide your own.

Yes, family breakdown cover can be a practical option for single-parent households. The policy covers you and up to 3 other people you live with, including children at university who live elsewhere during term time. Kids can be added to the policy at any time, and they would be covered if they were riding as a passenger in a grandparent or childminder’s car, for example.

With our family breakdown cover, you’ll have access to Accident Assist – a complimentary 24/7 accident claim support service.

Recovery is provided free of charge if the accident wasn’t your fault. It’s also free if you’re at fault and opt for Accident Assist to handle your claim. If you decide to a make a claim with your insurer instead of Accident Assist or choose not to make a claim and require recovery only, there will be a fee to pay.

Once the emergency services have confirmed it’s safe, we’ll try to get your vehicle back on the road so you and your family can continue your journey. If repairs aren’t possible there and then, we’ll arrange to take your vehicle to a nearby garage instead.

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.

We'll help with breakdowns that happen from 24 hours after you’ve updated us.
