About short term car insurance
When you need cover for a few days or a week rather than a full year, short-term car insurance could be the solution. It gives eligible UK drivers flexible, time-limited insurance for situations like borrowing, buying or sharing a car. It's designed for quick set-up and practicality.
The short-term car insurance available on this page is arranged through Tempcover as the fulfilment partner.
What is short-term car insurance, and how does it work?
In simple terms, short-term car insurance, or temporary car insurance, is a way to organise cover that lasts from 1 to 28 days for eligible drivers.
You might use it if you want to drive a car for a short time without adding a named driver to an existing annual policy. That could mean borrowing a family member's car for a weekend, or sharing the driving on a trip.
Short-term car insurance is separate from a car owner's annual policy. If a claim is made on the temporary policy, it shouldn't affect the car owner's no-claims discount on their own insurance. For a fuller guide, see our advice on how short-term car insurance works.
As with any insurance, always check the insurer's policy documents before buying. Cover, exclusions and eligibility can vary.
Short-term car insurance vs annual cover
The main differences between short-term and annual insurance are the policy's length and purpose. Annual policies cover the use of a car over a year. Short-term car insurance is for use within a defined period.
If you only need to drive once, for a few days or during a short gap between plans, taking out a temporary policy may be better than being added as a named driver to someone else's insurance.
Yet temporary cover is not a way to avoid having an annual policy on a car that's only driven occasionally, as legally the vehicle still needs to be insured. If you're not driving your own car at all, it can be declared off-road instead.
Some temporary car insurance policies don't cover business use, certain vehicle types, or carrying goods or passengers for payment. Always check the policy documents to confirm it meets your needs.
When short-term car insurance could suit you
Short-term car insurance can work if you're briefly borrowing a car or driving a vehicle home after buying it. Even so, you'll still need to insure the new vehicle immediately afterwards.
It can also be useful for some learners, although dedicated insurance for learner drivers may be a better fit if you need cover before your test.
If you're unsure, a good question is this: do you need cover for a short, one-off period, or else for regular driving? If it's temporary and specific, temporary car insurance could be a practical option. If it's ongoing, annual cover is the legal option.
