Overall rating 4/5The Toyota Verso is an MPV that balances space, safety and simple running costs to keep up with busy everyday life. Its focus has always been on flexible seating, a roomy cabin and hassle-free ownership. The first Verso arrived in 2009, building on the successful Corolla Verso. Key updates came in 2013 with new engines and improved tech. Its run ended in 2018. The Verso competes with the Ford C-Max, Renault Grand Scenic and Volkswagen Touran, but has Toyota’s subtly brilliant build quality and reliability to boost its rating. Inside, you can configure the seats in a number of ways, including the option to have a fully flat floor when transporting larger items. Plus, there's plenty of storage for the entire family and fuel-efficient engines to help save you money.
The Toyota Verso scored the highest five-star rating for safety in Euro NCAP tests. It offers front, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control and seatbelt reminders as standard. ISOFIX child seat mounts are also fitted.
The Verso launched with 1.8-litre petrol engines and more economical 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre diesels. In 2013, a refresh saw the 2.0 diesel updated for better emissions and lower running costs. It was eventually replaced by a smoother 1.6-litre diesel. A 1.6-litre petrol engine also exists in later models.
Versos are well equipped, with air conditioning, electric windows and a CD stereo as standard. Higher trims add touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, navigation and a reversing camera.
Depending on the engine, petrol models average 35 to 42mpg, while newer diesels can reach over 60mpg. Actual efficiency varies with use and whether the car is loaded.
Check the service history, especially for recall work on airbags. It's also sensible to ensure that the clutch and gearbox feel right and all electrics are working. Inspect for heavy cabin wear, especially on seats and the load cover. When you've found a used model you like, book The AA Vehicle Inspection before making a final decision.
The Verso ranks highly in owner surveys, with Toyota’s reputation for few faults and long-lasting parts shining here. Aside from minor recalls and the odd electrical niggle, most Versos should deliver a worry-free, long-term drive if properly maintained.
