Overall rating 4.5/5First going on sale in 2007, the Auris is a competent family hatchback which, despite facing stiff competition from the class leaders (such as the VW Golf), manages to stand out as a practical and affordable option.

The Corolla may still be going strong elsewhere, but in Europe the perennial mid-range family Toyota was replaced by the Auris in 2006. While it could be said that few were troubled by this, the Auris does take up where the Corolla left off, in many ways bettering it. Mixing the firm reliability, excellent safety and calm, assured drive of the Corolla with enviable efficiency - best displayed in the Hybrid (74mpg), but equally impressive in the 1.4 diesel (58mpg) - and plenty of space, the Auris is a car which seriously competes with the leading family hatchbacks on the market.
