Overall rating 4.5/5This humble sedan came into existence as the W201 190E and 190D, often known as the Baby Benz due to its compact dimensions and affordable price tag. Mercedes-Benz then rebranded it as the C-Class, positioning it as an attainable version of the bigger E and S-Class luxury sedans.
You expect a level of comfort and class with a Mercedes badge, and that sums up the C-Class experience. Despite being priced lower than other Mercedes-Benz models, the C-Class has always been an outright luxury sedan, offering class-leading comfort and refinement. Yes, it might not be as sporty as a BMW 3 Series or as technologically advanced as an Audi A4, but the Mercedes offers more than enough luxury and comfort for the price, making it a popular pick. There have been five generations of the C-Class, including wild AMG versions such as the revered C63 AMG. As a used luxury sedan, it’s hard to not look at the C-Class. It just happens to tick all your boxes and more importantly, it has the three-pointed badge on its nose.

Mercedes-Benz models are comprehensive when it comes to safety and so the C-Class offers a good set of standard safety features. Some of the highlights are lane keep assist, active parking assist, numerous airbags, traffic sign alert, Distronic adaptive cruise control, pre-safe system, active brake assist, and Mercedes’ attention assist.
The C-Class has been offered with plenty of petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options in the past and present. Some popular engines are the petrol C180 and C200, which uses a 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0-litre petrol engine. Meanwhile, the diesel engines are also hugely popular and these include the 2.0/2.1-litre options such as the C200, C220, C250, C300 and the most-powerful and refined six-cylinder C350 CDI. Furthermore, Mercedes also offers the C-Class with hybrid engine options.
Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been equipped with plenty of technology and infotainment features. Some standout features are MBUX infotainment system, optional Burmester surround sound system, wireless charger, navigation support, touch-sensitive controls, digital driver’s display, dual-zone climate control system, etc.
The fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class varies depending on the specific engine and drivetrain configuration. The current generation C-Class is really fuel-efficient as it incorporates hybrid technology. The C 300 e (petrol plug-in ybrid) has a combined fuel efficiency of around 100-150 mpg. Meanwhile, the C300 with mild hybrid tech also offers anywhere between 45 and 50 mpg, combined.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class can be a reliable and enjoyable luxury sedan, especially if they are well-maintained and you are aware of any potential issues. The C-Class is known to have higher maintenance cost than its rivals, and some owners have reported issues with older generations from the early 2000s. Common issues are related to complex electronics and sensors that haven’t aged well. They are well built and so are less susceptible to corrosion. So, although generally reliable, older generations of the C-Class could have some reliability issues, more to do with the age of the sedan.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been offered with numerous engine options over its production years since 1992. There have been plenty of engine options from 1.5-litre petrol engines to even a 6.3-litre V8 in the C63 AMG. In between, there are also six-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, along with hybrid engines. Popular engine sizes are 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1-litre.
