The Mercedes CLC is designed for drivers who want eye-catching style and the feel of a luxury brand, but still value sense and everyday comfort. Introduced in 2008 as an update to the earlier C-Class Sports Coupe, it features over 1,000 new components, including refreshed styling inside and out. Production finished in 2010, and while its rivals include the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, the CLC remains the most affordable way into Mercedes coupe ownership. Across its short life, the CLC offered both petrol and diesel engines, competitive equipment levels and that unmistakable three-pointed star. Spacious up front, the car does have a smaller back seat area, so take this into consideration if you often travel with passengers. Still, it delivers secure handling and the strength of Mercedes’ reputation.
The Mercedes CLC covers the safety basics of its time. Standard features include multiple airbags, acceleration skid control and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme). ISOFIX mountings in the rear add reassurance for families. While it predates some more recent systems, it still offers good occupant protection for its age.
You’ve got the choice of either petrol or diesel when it comes to the CLC. The main engines include 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol units (badged CLC 180/200 Kompressor), and 2.1-litre diesels (CLC 200 CDI/220 CDI). If you find yourself in a CLC 350 Sport, you'll enjoy 268bhp from the powerful V6 3.5-litre engine housed under the bonnet.
Even entry-level models include climate control, a CD-multichanger audio system, electric windows and mirrors. Higher trims can give you leather seats. Satnav and Bluetooth were available on some CLCs, but may not be standard across the range, so check each example for its list of features.
Average fuel economy for the petrol models is around 28-40mpg, while diesels can achieve closer to 40-50mpg depending on driving style and exact engine choice. Actual results will vary, but overall, running costs are modest for a coupe of this age.
Look for signs of interior wear and check all electronics (windows, air con and infotainment) operate as they should. Listen for knocks from the suspension and any excess smoke when road-testing a diesel. It’s wise to inspect service history and evidence of recall work on 2009-2011 models. Consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection for peace of mind before buying.
Generally, the CLC is reliable if serviced regularly. The engines are robust, and parts are widely available in the UK. Owners sometimes mention minor electrical niggles or squeaks from trim, but serious faults are rare. As always, a well-cared-for example is likely to give low-stress ownership.
